lol you guys. If anyone is struggling with the tech test, post and let us know. Im pretty confident that we can get you thru it. If you're nervous about going alone to take the test, perhaps some can team up and go together. I've been debating about studying for my extra license, so with some time to prep, someone down in my neck of the woods that wants a tag along I could go with.
What ^he^ said. ask away! I know many of us will help in any way we can. If you need study get-togethers, lets do that!
Nice thing about the tests are the questions and answers are published. You only need to be familiar with the key words.
Side note:
We could persue a club Call sign... just a thought
I have the following names as needing to take the license test: asmo, Irving, cstone, davsel, sellersm, Tim K, skullybones, Brian, and bobbyfairbanks
Would those of you who live in the greater Denver area consider taking the test with Asmo on Feb 1? There is plenty of time to be fully prepared for the Technician-level test, and probably the General as well.
For those who lie in the Springs Streetglideok can get you squared away soon.
This is easy stuff, guys, and we can help you. Just speak up!
Thanks...

Hmmm... I do need to finally take my Extra exam. Now that one is a bugger to study for.
I'm 2/3 of the way through Ham Radio For Dummies. Unlike many of you, I have ZERO background with this stuff, so I needed to read something to familiarize me with everything. Once I finish this book, I'll work on the flash cards and go from there. I don't know if I can make it by Feb 1st. If it feels like I can, I'll pm Asmo and try to hook up with him.
I bought the flash cards and ended up tossing them in the recycling bin: the free online version is so much easier. You toggle through the cards and if you pick the wrong answer, it highlights the correct one. My wife spent about three hours online and passed the test....she had zero background in this stuff (I didn't either, it was more alien to me than general chem in college).
If you spent two hours with the online version this afternoon, you could easily pass the test tomorrow morning.

Irving,
YOU CAN DO IT, MAN!!! I used ehams.com to study for the general test, and the ARRL book to study for the Technician. 2 weeks; make it happen soldier! Do you want me, streetglieok, ginhcraes, rbeau30, driver, hatidua, and cmailliard stoppng by your house? :-)
Besides, asmo needs company!
Haha, I have no concerns about passing the test at all. 35 multiple choice with the answers posted on-line? No problem.
That's the honest truth. Lot of guys who are hams have troubles with this. Some radios are not user friendly and rely on the operator to know frequency offsets, tones, etc. My two Yaesus were pretty good about that, once you learned how to use the things. My kenwood, though easier to work, and navigate, required more knowledge about the offsets, etc.
Irving are you trying to grasp and understand the material, or just learn to pass the test? For the tech license I'm not judging you one way or the other, but if you're struggling, or feel intimidated at all, by all means let us know. Sometimes its easier to have someone explain something to you, than it is to read it. Take the practice tests on eham.net, and see how you fair. If you're missing a lot in one area, then lets work on that. The same goes for anyone else as well.
We've also been dabbling with digital transmissions, and it hasn't been too hard for me to get setup. Some radios are a lot more involved than others however. It would let one person to transmit a digital message to another, or group of people, such as spreadsheets, text type messages etc. One type is pretty slow, but works good even when the signal is too weak to hear a person's voice.
I'm not struggling with anything so far, because I haven't done a practice test. I'm trying to get a decent understanding of everything as a concept first. Again, I'm not worried about the test at all.
That's fine, and not a bad idea. Give the practice test a try and see where you stand. It's mostly about regulations, some about operations, and a little on theory.
I'm a Amateur Extra, I would recommend if your going to go above Tech license to keep studying and keep on track. Take a test each month to go to the next level.
I would somewhat agree, if you can study 15-20 minutes a day you can do them month after month, but I would say take the tech test and then take the general at the same testing session. I'm a VE tester and talk alot of people into taking the next test at the same time. Plus taking online practice test can really speed up the process.
Hey guys,
I was online at ARF.com, and they have an echolink/iRLP net every Friday at6:30 PM MT. Im going to t to connect this week to see if it works and learn more about it. I encourage others here to give it a try as well. There is also a giveaway of some sort if you are registered on QRZ. The link for the thread is: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/6...=bottom#bottom
Singlestack
I'm game. hopefully I can get an antenna today.
Singlestack, see you there.
Back atche Tech. If I can't connect via echolink - they have had problems since the started in November - I may try to connect via IRLP. Appears the rumor the prize is a KX3 are unfounded, unfortunately.
Anybody else taking the test next Saturday? I'm ready for tech, just started reading over the general questions. Seems like there's a lot more memorization-type questions vs physics and "common sense" questions. Any other recommendations for studying up? I had given my ARRL books away, and was just using hamstudy.org and some apps that were free for my phone.
asmo, are you still in? The test on the 15th is closer to me, but if you're in, I would still make the trip to meet up and to finally get this done.
I'll shoot for the 15th. Something else came up that I need to dedicate the next week to.
My two Baofeng UV5RA radios came in yesterday.
Charged them up and programmed in a couple of Colorado Springs repeaters.
Only thing I heard was a morse ID every half hour from one of them (145.130 Colorado Connection).
I'll hook up the data cable and program some more freqs in this weekend.
Just need to take the test.
Okay so I broke open the ARRL book. 95% of this is normal/easy stuff. But I have to memorize what freq. bands are available by what size antenna and what their silly rules are.. Blah.
What emission modes are permitted in the mode-restricted sub-bands at 50.0 to 50.1 MHz and 144.0 to 144.1 MHz?
Answer: WHAT EVER THE HELL I WANT.. ;)
One thing I liked about this book: http://www.w5yi.org/catalog_details.php?pid=69&sort=4
Basically it had all the questions...and highlighted the "KEY WORD(s)" to remind you of the answer. IE: "Mode Restricted" = "CW Only"
It had some explanation part as well but I just skimmed over that stuff.
The ARF.com echolink net is starting in about 5 minutes. See my earlier post on page 11 or so - check it out if you have Echolink installed.
