So I went to the South shooting site for the first time today. I had to convert the lat long from decimel so I could put it into my nav system. (its Latitude: 39° 8' 36.841" N Longitude: 105° 7' 41.408" W by the way) I didn't have any trouble finding it, but apparently you do have to watch out for people walking or driving across the top of the hill that you are shooting against. No accounting for a lack of common sense. I carried out more trash than I took in, which I guess is normal. I think the next time I go, I will take a table and shooting stool with me.

I have seen those people several times, can not imaging what is going thru the head at the time they walk over the rise....


I sometimes shoot there with my kids, we take a table and chairs, lots of fruit and other reative targets and get there early (by 8am). We set up in the 100yd lane and usually meet some nice folks before we leave around noon.

I drove down from Denver and worked out my AR, Hi Power, & 10-22.

I found that the battery had died on the MKII sight so I put it away as I didn't have a spare.

So I was about to pack up and a truck pulls up with some shooters, and I introduce myself to Tim K & his friend. After we talked a bit I tell Tim I didn't get to to shoot the MK II due to the battery and he tells me he has a spare- sweet!

So I installed the battery and plinked off 20 rounds - thanks Tim!

Can't someone edit the thread title? Every time this thread is upped I think another sweet shooting site has been closed :D

I took my cousin down there when he visited last month and he had a great time.

My pleasure. You left just in time. We each got in 10 rounds before the lightning scared us off the hill. By the time we got loaded back up the sky was in full fireworks mode. Cool to watch, but not conducive to good shooting.

I started this thread to let everyone know about the poor conditions of the South Site when I went up there after Rampart Range was closed. Since the closing of Rampart the site is getting more like a landfill. Sadly it is mostly the members of CO AR-15 that has taken care of the removal of trash. Thank you to everyone who has helped there just like anywhere else members shoot and clean for oter people to keep our public ranges open.

I was up there today with my kids and we left with a lot more than we came with.

Not too much in the area I was shooting from.

I was there today.

The place was pristine... no trash... casings... left over targets... looked killer!

The drive over CO67 in my all wheel drive EVO X, which has new Eagle GT's, Hawk HPS Brake Pads and 2 degrees of neg camber was AWESOME! CO67 is so much fun to drift on. Ask ERIN MT... At one point he reached over and tightened his belts!

Also, we was blown away by the SCAR & AR's just lying in the back seat all exposed. Guess that's a no no in KALIFORNIA!


MOUNT-N-SLOT

My two sons and I were there yesterday, and the spot we were at did have a little trash when we got there, but not terrible. We picked up what we could (a couple cans, some PVC piping, and target pieces), but there was still a pallet and what looked to be some moulding remnants left that we didn't have room for. Overall, we had a great time and the other people that were there seemed to take extra time to clean up anything that was left by others before they got there as well.

I went to the south site (I think - let me know if this looks like it)

Photo of this firing range was pretty clean, the one below this had some pallets and stuff, I didn't have room in the car for all that. I cleaned up some items on the range shown, otherwise pretty good shape I think.

Was there on Saturday, WAY in the back and the site we were at was pretty clean!

I was there Saturday and brought back 4 trash bags of crap. It was relatively clean. I was annoyed that someone left a bunch of phone books.

Went out there today. I had to take a spot up into the site a bit because the main spots were taken.

When I left I noticed pallets and a few other bits of trash at the first 2 sites (including the site gnihcraes has in his pic above - had a pallet or two).

Since I was full up with my gear and my buddies gear I wasn't able to stop and clean up the garbage left over from other shooters. Sorry.

On a side note, I went with my best friend/hunting partner and now he wants an AR. I also went with another friend and his 77yo father-in-law. The father-in-law owns a 30-06 (only) and has only shot it once - about 25 years ago. The son-in-law friend of mine doesn't own a gun. They brought out hte 30-06 and we had a little competition to see who'd shoot it the best.

I took out a couple of AR's, a GSG-5, about a dozen .22LR handguns, and a .45ACP 1911 (obviously everything was a loaner and none were mine since I lost everything in that tragic boating accident.).

My best friend brought his CZ 9mm and his .357mag carry gun.

They all had a blast and now the son-in-law is planning to buy a .22LR handgun (still up in the air as to what type/model) to get his wife and daughters into shooting and eventually a 9mm for personal defense. I know, 9mm, but he's gotta start somewhere, right? The 9mm is cheap enough to shoot and get used to it versus a .45. I offered him advice on all sorts of things ranging from the type of handgun (western styles, other wheel guns and semi-auto's) to different calibers. Since he needs to feel comfortable with his decision and since he is just starting out, I endorsed his choices so far.

The father-in-law is also planning to buy a 9mm for personal protection and for just plain old shooting fun.

They had a great time and I feel like I did my part to bring new folks into the shooting sports. I was especially pleased that they listened to me as our "Range Officer" and they practiced excellent safety skills.

The shooting gods must have been with me today because I was really on the money with my shots (really impressed the friend and his father-in-law). Wish I could shoot like that all of the time but I didn't tell them I was just having a really good day!

Oh, and I won the impromptu 30-06 competition. Not bad for a rifle that I haven't shot before and I know it isn't sighted properly.

This was only my second time shooting this year. I know, I know. I plan to go out again next weekend with my son and his girlfriend. May use one of the shooting sites off of Mt. Herman Road West of Monument. Overall, I didn't shoot very much, but the 1991 finally broke it's virginity after more than a year and a half since it was purchased.

Now, I have a lot of guns to clean. UGH!

Given that I'm paranoid and have learned a few things from some of your posts and articles I've read, I did maintain a fully loaded and ready 92FS on my hip as a
deterrent against someone coming and deciding to relieve us of our firearms.

I was there today. Oops - midnight - yesterday. I was planning on Ben Lomond but their calendar showed about 4 events. There were a few carloads of people. I went down to the south side and had a nice area to myself. It was great for a lot of rifle & pistol. I was amazed I actually could hit the target. A lot of crazy stuff has happened for me for some time so it was my first real shooting session in over a year. Over a 100 rounds through a P3-AT really hammer my hand.

I brought a couple bags of trash out. Mostly shotgun shells and paper targets. Some cardboard also. If I would have had gloves I would have hauled some pallet remnants. I know they biodegrade and all that but they look like crap all shot to pieces. Still, it was pretty clean. I hope it stays that way.

Headed out for the first time today. Pretty drive from Highlands Ranch. There was another couple there (I went with my wife) but otherwise the place was abandoned.

Pretty clean for a public range. Just some a few steel cases here and there (which rust away over time anyway) and a few busted watermelons on the berm. We made sure to police up our targets and our brass (as well as some debris on the berm) before we left. Lets keep up the good work so this range stays clean and open.

Just returned from there myself. After I dialed in the 270 where I wanted it, I finished off the watermelon carcasses with about 50 of my first ever 223 reloads.

Where exactly is it located? I used to go to Rampart Range and now go to Left Hand Canyon but its full of gangsters to say the least. Im looking for somewhere else to go that has a farther range.

If you're heading from the Springs, take 67 out of Woodland Park it's one mile past the sign for Rainbow Falls. Turn left onto the road head up abit -can't miss it!

If you're heading from North of there, someone else will have to chime in.

I was there today. I'm a Ben Lomond member but it was such a great I decided the mountains would be more fun. I like this global warming stuff. I was out there in a t-shirt and was warm. Barely any breeze.

I went further south than usual and it gets really clean down there. I had to work to get a small bag of shotgun shells and brass, I hope it stays like this for a long time. The shooters there take care of it.

I'd seen the horror show years ago at Rampart Range and joined a club. Hope the nimrods who ruined that will never find the south site.

I was at the South Site with some friends on Saturday. Aside from a handful of shotgun shells and a couple plastic cups that we picked up, it was in decent shape. It was a really great day for some shooting!

I shoot at the south site almost every weekend and I've seen a tremendous increase in the number of shooters out there in the last year. It's still fairly clean and I pick up trash when I go, but I worry about the future of this area since I'm seeing more and more of the same "people" I used to see at Rampart Range.

is this place snowed in? anyone been by there in since the snow we just got?

We went yesterday and saw two other trucks, it's still cold enough that it's snowy- once it warms a bit it's gonna get soupy. But if you have a 4wd or awd you should be good to get back in to it while it stays this temp.

So i've driven by the site from the Woodland Park direction, but if I'm coming from Castle Rock, which way do you guys think would be best? Deckers via Sedalia, and then down?

If you like 20 mph twisty curving roads for 45 minutes, there is a way to get there from Castle Rock. Otherwise going down to Colo. Springs then come in from the south is better.
