Not a native Coloradan but moved there in 75, went in the AF in 79, then moved back in 89 when I got out. Lived there for the next 26 years. Was just about 10 years too long. Couldn't be happier with where we landed after leaving.
That's a great picture of the old airport. I remember watching the planes taxi across the freeway.
Born in Texas and lived there for the first 28 years of my life. Texas is pretty low on my list of states I?d like to live in. Unless you?re willing to live in one of the big cities the rest of the state is still living in the dark ages. The climate doesn?t suit me for the majority of the state as well.
I remember when I moved here people would give me a little shit for being from Texas. I bet in retrospect they should have encouraged me to bring more friends and family with me. I?m guessing if the amount of people moving here from Texas was as great as the number of people flooding in from California the political climate over the last twenty years would be totally different.
Say what you want about Texans but they do value their freedoms and liberties and are pretty intolerant of those that would try and infringe on their rights.

It was a struggle on the GI Bill ($135/month total) to come up with the $200 of back taxes, but the savings on tuition was real.
Extra jobs, gold panning in Left Hand Canyon, and contract work supplemented my costs to graduation.
Married a 3rd generation Colorado girl (her parents and grandparents were from Victor, CO)
My job required I travel to a lot of other states for 40 years, and:
I still like Colorado the best.

Returned in 1970.
Colorado had not become veteran friendly yet and required their servicemen to pay state taxes to remain state residents.
Way to prove to CU that you were a Colorado resident was to submit your state income tax returns.
I don't think Florida has a personal income tax.
I was discharged at Treasure Island in San Francisco and the wise men said that was the best place to stay.
CA had the highest unemployment payments, longest term for those payments, automatic California residency, and free tuition at 2-year Jr. Colleges and all of the credits transferred to the Univ. of Calif. Not so Colorado.
I couldn't be convinced. I wanted to return to CO.

Navy was a little different in the 60's.
No requirement for state tax withholding as I recall. I was not aware of the Colorado requirement to file state tax forms, and was at an age that my thoughts were on other things.
You would just leave your pay on the books and draw down whatever you needed for runs to the store or to go on liberty.
When I was separated from active duty, I had enough on the books to buy a used VW Squareback, tour the country for 2 months, and to pay my first year at CU.
I was pretty frugal and kept all of the extra pay for hazardous duty, etc.
Just was not in my wheelhouse.
The problem is that most of the people moving here from Texas lately are coming from Travis County so not really any better than Californians.Quote:

The answer to the question is that every interstate in Texas has frontage roads for every mile of interstate, which makes the Texas Turnaround possible.
Yeah, the frontage roads are great. They allow through traffic and allow local access. If there's a problem shutting down the highway, route traffic onto the frontage road and then back onto the highway at the next on-ramp. It's extremely flexible.
Then again, Texas A&M actually monitors and recommends changes to improve traffic conditions.

How'd the move go?
It went well! I got in to Austin on Tuesday, picked out an apartment and applied for it that night, was approved and moved in on Friday! My mattress set got trashed, sadly, so I slept on the floor that night, then a new bed arrived on Saturday. I don't have any living room furniture, so the TV is sitting on some boxes and I chill in a beach chair, lol! I have some furniture coming in this week to improve that, but I still need to find a couch. I'll post up some photos tonight.Quote:
