Lists a lot/most steel types
A lot of these photos are older collection shots. I have gone through a lot of knives in the past several years. I have culled the collection recently and now I'm down to the ones I use and like the most.
The khukuri is the traditional knife of Nepal. The cutout is called a "cho" It's purpose or symbolism is lost. Even the makers or "kamis" as they are called don't know the true meaning. Some say it represents the hindu symbol of fertility, a cow track, cow horns, etc. Others speculate that it keeps blood on the blade from dripping on to the handle.
The majority of my khuk collection has been passed on. I'm amassing firearms now. [ROFL2]
This is a great link about steels. All the info you need.

These are a couple shots of my favorite khuks and knives from Himalayan Imports.

You know I read somewhere about guys with big knives making up for there sexual inadaquacys..................
just kidding
Those are really cool pictures. Please tell me you chopped through those logs with one of your knives.
Thanks guys. I read through one of these links, then went to read the other, only to find out that they are word for word, the exact same information. If the same guy doesn't work for both places, there is a serious plagiarism case here.
Eldorado love your collection!!! That first knife can you tell me the maker and where you got it I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!!!!!
Of course. Not using them would be like building rifles and not shooting them, where's the fun in that?
If your referring to the large khukuri atop the cut wood it's a Himalayan Imports 22" Bonecutter. Not too many of those around.
I carry a Becker Companion.

Massive, inexpensive and high quality steel. I have a Becker Brute too, and have used both in the backcountry. The brute has a wider back near the rear edge to use for batoning the blade. I'm starting to appreciate the kukri design more and more though. the sheath leaves something to be desired, so I wrapped it in paracord for durability. Hell, I wrap EVERYTHING in paracord.
I just bought a Stryker and it's 5/16 inch steel, just massive.

I steer towards heavier knives mostly because I've broken the thinner ones while misusing them. I just dont want some casual misuse to damage my only tool. The Becker Companion I bought for 47 bucks from tomarskabars.com it's a bit more expensive now, but it's a no-frills kinda knife. No fancy finish, no fancy scales (although you can buy some) and a kydex sheath. I'm just a heavy knife guy nowadays. ESEE and the like are good knives, but they are pricey for my tastes.
Just curious to know what everybody thinks is the best survival knife? I use a Gurka Knife, KaBar and a SOG Seal Pup. They have all served well over the years.
What do you use? Pic's would be nice.
I love my Seal pup, fantastic knife.
That's the one I take hiking/hunting/fishing. If I found myself in a survival situation it would be my go-to blade.
Well I'm sure Staglefty will be here shortly to show me up (lol), but I will post mine anyway.

Both knives in the pic are fairly new to me, the smaller one (IZULA) is my daily carry, and the larger one (ESEE4), is my camping/backpacking/survival knife. I have yet to use either of them very hard, but the quality alone leaves me confident, that once I need them, they will be phenomenal. I've also used the Seal Pup Elite in the past, and it's also a great knife.
If I was the kind of person that thought the government couldnt provide all I need I would say a Cold Steel SRK. But Obama will take care of me so I dont need one
I have a seal pup. I love it. I had an awesome leather sheath made by the guy Rocky Mountain Tanners (Formerly Jerry's Leather). Excellent job. I will post pics later.
I think knives are just like our guns,we'll all have personal favorites. I have Kbar's,Spyderco's,Gerber's, etc. All good knives. I've recently became a huge ESEE fan. Made in the USA,no BS warranty, fair prices, great edge, and easy to sharpen.
Here you go Hurley-try not to drool in your coffee [Beer]

I see people like the seal pup, but it's made in Taiwan, and that's a turn off for me. Is it that good?
What about the Gerber LMF? Anyone have one of those?
Was it a Gerber LMF II or the older style?
I've heard from more than one person that the LMF II has trouble holding an edge. Just what I've heard though (from multiple people).
The Companion and the Brute. I believe in tool steel!!!
I did too, till I found out how hard to sharpen my D2 Kabar is.
Scrapyard knives are just about as good as it gets IMO. Smaller company cause they don't really make any of the cheap crap people like to buy (your everyday folder). Look up knife destruction tests on youtube, there's a guy that does em. Check out the one for the SEAL and the one for the Scrapyard, a lot of us (including me) have a SEAL/pup so keep in mind how good of a knife it is, then compare it to the Scrapyard. That video is what sold me on them.
FYI the destruction tests, the guy basically cuts shit from softest to toughest and sees how it does (starts with a piece of fruit, ends with steel plate or concrete), tests how well they chop, pry, chisel, etc. till he breaks it.
Are you guys with the Seal Pups happy with the Taiwan steel? I see the early ones can be had at a premium, and they were made in Seki City.
I did watch some of those Utube vids on these various knives- they can be helpful but- there are many that love the CS SRK- even though the handle comes loose after a while. That would drive me nuts.
Seki city is in Japan and known for making really good knives. I have several, they hold an edge wonderfully and take some pretty rough use. As far as Cols Steel SRKs loosing the handle. I have 2 and havent had the problem. 1 of them gets used pretty hard ona regular basis. Maybe I have been lucky.
I also found Scrapyard Knives on the internet, looks like some cool, high quality stuff fairly priced.
Fairly priced -IF- the prices on their site are current. I checked ebay and there are 2 "SOD" knives posted for sale at twice the price shown at the Scrapyard site.
Ouch. Customer service at Scrapyard leaves something to be desired. Their website shows quite a few knives for sale, types, prices, etc. Remember these are not $400 and up customs, these are basically $100 and some change knives. When I inquired via email as to the availability of a knife shown and to verify price- I was told the following virtually word for word- we put a few knives up on the order page for 4-8 weeks, when they're gone we take them down and they may never be available again. We only have blah and blah avail at this time. Thank you.
Have a nice day Scrapyard and goodbye. (from me)

That's your opinion. I'm pretty sure most of the folks posting on this subject know what whatever knife they're talking about looks like.
What's the big deal about the response? Not sure I'm following.
