He had clear opportunities in Ice cream, meatballs, cheap robot toys, and video games.

He's narrowed the gap a large amount, so maybe he'll be able to save before the price moves again. Maybe not though, because unless he increases his income, his savings rate will decrease due to a higher cost of living.
