My UPS driver happens to be the UPS driver for my work. They work those people to death. The little handheld thing they have? GPS tracking. If they stay in one place too long (couple minutes) they get a phone call. He delivers to all the commercial addresses on his route, then after business hours he does the houses in my neighborhood.

It is very rare to get a visitor at the door, and I like that. When the doorbell rings, I go for the second gun and the wife does for hers before I even go to the door.

They could have been looking for a female to answer the door that was home alone, and without a dog. Easier to overpower and get inside without glass breaking noises, etc. Plus, if someone is home generally the alarm is not on.

Naw man.. the union is watching over them* I have a few clients who are UPS driver. ATM, they hired too many people, so some of them got short days or drive tandem w/ an assistant. Some make close to 5 digit as drivers.

I think what would concern me the most in this situation is home invasion and not making myself vulnerable. For the most part, the only people who come on my property unannounced are neighbors and delivery guys so I am concerned about anybody I don't know. I did have one guy a few years back who came to the door at the same time I was coming down my stairs with one of my AR15s who I saw through the window in the door (I had the firearm completely by coincidence). The guy turned white; he just wanted to ask a few questions about the house for sale adjacent to my property; never saw him again.

Anyhow, your house as well as how you carry yourself says a lot about you. A few years ago, my car battery died at the Buffalo Creek shooting area and I had to walk out with my kid. It was Christmas time, and I found a house with numerous lights and decorations and went up to the door to ask for help because I profiled the people as likely to open the door and help of which they did. This can be either good or bad depending on who is looking at you and your home.

My wife doesn't like us keeping the front porch light on as a matter of practice, she says if you do, then you don't turn it on, it would signal to a potential thief you aren't home. I tell her they'd have to be watching our house over many days to notice that behavior… anyways, I installed a "motion detector" type light so it comes on if someone comes to the door.

I usually glance through the side window to see if its someone I know. If not I bring my handgun with me. I've also got two very large dogs that I don't restrain. I also have a sturdy storm-door while not hugely sturdy, its gonna take some effort as opposed to a screen door to get through… I never open that door and its locked. I figure if someone was going to try to bum rush me, it'd give me the few seconds to pull my firearm...

Leaving the light on all the time is much better than having someone hiding in the (dark) bushes to jump your wife when she gets home.

Showing a visible firearm to someone at your door can go both ways. It may let the shady charater know that you mean business and it's the wrong house to break into or it may act as a light bulb for them and give them more reason to get into your house ...when you're not home of course.

Or it could get you arrested, depending on how it is visible. Menacing with a deadly weapon is a felony.

Or wire it to a daylight switch so that you don't have to worry about remembering to turn it on.

Motion lights at the front and rear of the house. Porch light on at dusk, off when I get up in the morning (usually about 0530). If the rear motion light comes on, I'm instantly in Condition Orange, because there is no direct access to the back yard except over a 6 ft fence or a locked gate. I carry in the house about 95% of the time, and always when the doorbell rings.

Motion lights are pretty pointless for me with all the animals running everywhere.

I have a timer for outside lights. It replaces the light light switch. Also pay for home security.

I also never answer the door for anyone. I look through the hole on door and that's it. Our blinds in the front of house are also closed when not there and at night. So people can't just look in and see what we have.
