While I agree the government does not need to know everything they ask on the census, the corporations get far more from the information you give Google and Amazon and those affinity cards then they would ever get from the census. The census aggregates data while Google tries to narrow it down to specific people and addresses. Just try to get the depth of information on an individual you can get from Zillow, Spokeo, etc. out of the Census Bureau ... LOL.
