This is a good idea. Another more expensive option is to use an electric fence wire.

That's what we used to protect newly planted trees and shrubs. We get deer in the yard but rabbits are the biggest problem. I've made about 50 chicken wire surrounds, 18" & 24" high. Works pretty well.
