Truly sad. This guy was just enjoying our sport and Boom! It can happen anywhere, anytime if you aren't careful and responsible.
Exactly.
Sad this happened.
However, perhaps every one of us can take something from someone else's misfortune. If one or two folks read about this, and this story flashes into their mind that one time they are handling their firearm and it just happens that time they are preoccupied or not as attentive as they normally are. And this snaps them back into reality, I am sure the victim in this story would be glad this misfortune touched somebody enough to save a life.
The 4 basic rules of firearm handling are never negotiable.
A reminder:
1- EVERY firearm is loaded
2- Muzzle discipline
3- Finger off the trigger until sights are on target
4- Be sure of your target and beyond
Unfortunate mishap, peace and solace to the family.
Sad, I would hate to put my wife through this. Richard can't be too happy either. Are the cops being cool or taking a hard line with him/store? It's obviously not his fault (from the reports) but sometimes that does not matter.
Current idea of events... he was in the driver's seat, swapping from target to defense ammo, and most have fumbled somewhere between dropping the mag and clearing the slide. In trying to catch it, he hit the trigger with the muzzle pointed towards him and was hit in the chest (where specifically, I'm not sure). He then made his way towards the trunk, either for a med kit or cell phone, opting to access it from inside the vehicle for any number of reasons. He just didn't have enough time to make it there.
I'll know more tomorrow.
Tragic. My condolences to a fellow shooter.

If he was headed for a medkit then he probably did what most of us men do...thought to himself that he didn't need a doctor...that he could handle it himself.
Know what you are capable of fixing and not. Leave the things you cannot to an expert...regardless of how embarrassing it may be.
