The hubris of man has no limit.
I don't think that human activity is insignificant, not at all. That doesn't mean I think there should be Federal pressure though.
To put a value of significance to it, you have to be able to quantify it, know enough about it to determine cause, and also determine what fraction is attributable to mankind. None of that can be done based on our current understanding. Anthropogenic global warming/climate change/etc. is a hell of a lot closer to religion than true science.
A single volcanic eruption can put out more noxious gases than the emissions generated by man since the industrial revolution. We like to have the illusion of being significant...but we really aren't.
Very interesting! But, hypothetically, let's allot 4 sq. ft. per person, enough space for a person to stand in. Given that, how big an area would it take to put the entire population of Earth on? Not live on, just a representation of every human standing in one big group, each on his 4 sq.ft. spot?
Just curious -
6.9 billion x 4 sq/ft should do it.
39,600 sq/mi?
I don't know. Someone else can do the math.
Edit. If that shoddy math is correct, it'd be slightly larger than the state of Maine.
6.9 billion people... 4sqft each = 27,600,000,000 sqft = 990 sq miles = 633600 acres = About 2 Rocky Mountain National Parks
Or about 11.7 % of the total Denver Metro Area. ( Denver proper is 155 sq miles)
OR a little more then a JeffCo(780 sqmiles) but a little Less then an AdamsCo (1100Sqmiles)
Unless my first number is off...
EDIT
There enough whiskey has worn off to say it is not LOL
Yep, just rechecked. 990 sq/mi is correct.
Wow, thanks guys! Math ain't my thing, I just know that the human race isn't much more than a passing minor irritation to this planet. Man thinks he's the shit, Earth says "who?" One decent asteroid strike and we'd all be gone, but Mother would just keep on rockin'.....
