I went to a lot of games with my dad, and he was known to duck out early when it was clear that one team was going to lose the game. This was done to "beat the traffic". We'd listen to the game wrap up on the radio.

This. The Bears and Zephyrs drew decent crowds as people here DO love baseball. Now as much as there are true fans in the stands a lot go just for the social outing. Two years ago we got freebies to the rooftop-worst experience ever. Surrounded by sloppy drunks and just party people-which I’m glad they hang out there rather than in the seats.
Initially the crowds were there to see the visiting team-for me it was the Dodgers and Mets-but the real fan base is strong.
I always take light rail so don’t have to mess with traffic/parking.
I was just thinking about how the times have changed in our society and as a result, in baseball. I remember going to games as a kid on "bat night". Everyone got a full-sized, wood, baseball bat. Here you had a crowd of 50K+, each armed with what could be a "weapon", and nothing came of it. I don't remember anyone getting into drunken brawls at a game. Over time, "bat night" shrunk to a miniature wooden bat and there were more drunks at the game. I haven't gone to games for quite some time, but I would imagine "bat night" has been reduced to an inflatable facsimile of a bat.
I'm from the great baseball era as a kid. Skipped school to go to Fenway Park to see Ted Williams,Jimmy Piersal, Mickey Mantle,Carl Yastremski etc.
Great times !!!
Wow! You were very lucky! I spent my early years (up to age 12) in southern New Jersey and unfortunately my dad wasn’t able to take me to games in either Philly or NYC. In Tucson we at least had spring training (got to see a lot of great players, usually on teams against Cleveland) and the Astros farm team Tucson Toros. Movie trivia; in the film “Major League” when they’re at Hi Corbett field the guy holding the speed gun was actually the mascot who wore a bull’s head with a uniform during Toros games.
Anyway, baseball has been and always will be my favorite sport. Oh by the way the Red Sox are the only AL team I like because I despise the Yankees [LOL]
Oh-I just got 3 free months of the sports package from DirectTV so I can now watch the games at home. After July it’ll be an extra $13.
Except if it was 24 degrees in those towns too[ROFL1]
Am I the only one that doesn't give a shit about baseball?
