My mom raised three mountain lions for her doctorate years ago, and she concurs it must have been very juvenile. She was wondering if something happened to its mother, since it apparently hadn't properly learned hunting.

On archerytalk the consensus regarding mountain lion attacks in general is they are usually juveniles.
Wow. Running aware of the sights and sounds in nature, and being in good physical condition probably saved his life. Had he not turned around the cat might have taken him down by the neck and the struggle could have been over very quickly with a very different outcome.
The CPW should do a full taxidermy mount of that kitty and offer or dedicate it to Mr. Kauffman.
Juvenile mtn lion or mtn lion with rabies. If someone can choke out a lion, he is tier of it's own.
Read that they went back and trapped the cat's siblings.
Curious how large the cat really was.
