Finally !!!!

A lot of the sysadmin work I'm seeing now is hybridized, they want someone who is both a sysadmin and a programmer, so that they can do what I'm doing -- setup systems to be programatically deployed. I can type a single command and ten minutes later a new server instance is running and configured, all the unix software and codebase for the websites are deployed and switched on. Neat stuff.

Have you been doing anything to up your skills while unemployed? Ruby on Rails appears to be a decent language with a number of job positions open. Amazon EC2 is giving away free compute time on their Micro sized instances. A great way to learn UNIX is by using it in a cloud environment.

I wouldn't move to CA either, cost of living+laws+taxes=suck. There was a sysadmin/support job in SFO at my employers, but they filled it with a Muslim from Dallas. I told him that Zundg says even the nice ones try to kill you eventually. The response was a snortle.

you are correct about the hybridization.

Friend of mine is a Network and Satellite telecommunications engineer.
he is going to college to learn Microsoft, Linux, pearl and SQL because he also has to be the Sys admin, Helpdesk and the programmer when they fire the guy doing it now.
He's working 14 hours a day now, he says he expects to start sliding backwards within 4 weeks.

cutting from the bottom is never a good idea.

UNIX (and variants, I use the term interchangeably... POSIX compliant operating system would be the correct term) -- they're like shooting, not hard to do, but takes practice and patience to do well. It is an order of magnitude easier today than it use to be. You use to have to compile everything by hand.

There aren't a lot of people with 5 years of cloud experience, as it's a fairly new to see mainstreamed. I think my oldest Amazon code is S3 stuff from 2006.

A jack of all trades, I find it's more a matter of eveyone having a skill level for each particular craft. For example, my web programming, database, html, javascript values might be 8, unix system admin 6, and networking 4.

Anyway, it can't hurt to play with those things for free, so at least you can chat about them with a recruiter.
