There was good music that came out of the 80's? Hmmm, news to me. [Coffee]
Tooth-n-Nail records, anyone? The Shrapnel label had some very cool stuff.

For their first album, I would agree. "Metal Magic" is about as glam as you can get. But when Cowboys from Hell dropped they were definitely real metal.
Man Testament is where it's at. I found them about 20 years after they had become a band and baffled that I never knew they existed.
Metal has so many sub-genres you just barely scratched the surface... I love me some Viking Metal (also fits into doom metal) like Amon Amarth, and I actually like it, but there's a lot of Symphonic Metal (Nightwish) that's pretty good.
As far as the 80's go, I agree with the sentiment that some of the "lighter" stuff shouldn't be classified as metal. I grew up listening to Dio, Motley Crue (I guess metal), Def Leopard, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Sabbath, Pantera, and 80's Metallica.
Back in the day I liked Ozzy, AC/DC, and Motley Crue. Now about as crazy as I get is Alice Cooper, his old stuff to the most resent releases.
