We have had a 2nd hand Kirby for a WHILE. After 15-20 years I rebuilt the motor and replaced the footswitch. Still was able to get parts.

Dyson. We got the yellow/silver-ish looking one. (Not the roller ball design but regular looking wheels on the bottom). I was just talking with another fellow about the best purchases you've ever made and this was the first thing that came to mind. Damn thing is awesome. Buy once, cry once.

Another vote for Dyson. Ours is close to ten years old now and "has not lost suction" as their commercials tout.
