I'm a huge Alien, Predator, and Sci-Fi movie fan..
So you think if they were asleep that long they'd have long beards? But you believe we have the technology to travel to distance stars that take millions of light years and can live that long??? ;) Just sayin' there is this thing called "suspense of disbelief" when you watch certain genres of movies. Sci-fi being one of them.
Initially it was a let-down to me. I saw the first Alien movie in theaters back in '79 and was in awe. Not really the story I though Ridley Scott was going to tell. A bunch of my other "geek" friends saw it and we discussed. Afterwards I had a greater appreciation for it. Prometheus was actually pretty deep...
I would suggest either picking up or borrowing the version that has the commentary... They explain alot of things...

I'll be interested to see how they tie the next one or two to the beginning of the original. They have designed quite the little gap in there.
I've never quite figured out the folks who are so hung up on details. It's a movie, it's for entertainment, not to function as a documentary. I do understand the desire for realism; but there are some functional limits on what you can do with a movie and still have it be something people want to watch and be entertaining. You have to expect the magic guns that never need to be reloaded (or only every 500 rounds) or the aircraft that have impossible things built into them in some of these; I've noticed that it seems like the only ones where you see them reload are the ones where the reload is used to some effect for the storyline.

Here's an interesting little write up on prometheus. Explains a lot of what Riddley Scott was trying to say.

Alien has nothing to do with Predator as originally conceived (two different studios, rights, etc), those horrible movies where based on comic books. It is rumored that the the Weyland is tied into Bladerunner.

Prometheus looked really good, but it takes a lot to ignore the complete Swiss cheese of unbelievable or contradictory plot holes. A noticeable number of the characters are just plain stupid.

I believe the theory is that the passengers are in suspended animation so their biological processes slow down, including hair growth. They'd have to be fed intravenously or something if the processes didn't slow down, in which case they'd also have to take care of the waste.

I love it when people start applying what we understand the world to be when dealing with fantasy. [rules]

The first page cracked me up, along with the random quotes throughout. I enjoyed the film, mostly for the beginning and ending. Use of "Hollywierd" was my favorite word in this thread. I will use it from now on. Thank you. the end.

Loved it, especially on huge iMax 3D w/ sick booming sound system from hell. Tons of eye candy, sick CG, but of course the plot had HUGE holes, and the story left you too little in the end. I understand setting up the sequel to this, but they need to make also be able to somewhat stand on it's own, PLUS put in a tiny bit to connect to a sequel. For those of you with more questions than answers, and if you really wanna geek out, here's some good sites that blew up after it came out. LOT of confused (and some pissed off) people, especially die-hard sci-fi, RidleyScott, & Alien franchise fans...

One thing you can't deny, that ship is one of the coolest in any sci-fi movie every, definitely in my top-10! And Charlize Theron is a major hottie of course...
