USAFGopherMike: Thank you for the advice. I probably am making my decision by heart, but I am ok with that. My grandfather with in the Army during Korea and I looked up to him my whole life. I don't believe there are additional tests for Army OCS and from what I have read I will only be competing for a spot with other civilians and not current service members. The recruiters that I have been working with think I have a good chance. I say this because up until yesterday they were reluctant to help me get in to OCS but now they are exited for me. I may be reading into it but I am giving it a go.
As for looking into the chair force, I know you guys have nice soft rolly chairs, but I don’t want to get calluses on by butt and finger tips. J/K

Now lets move on to why there is a draft, and the word conscription.

It's the reason you either RE ENLIST or DON'T ENLIST. Showing him that there are other ways to live thanks to the military?

For those of you that openly flamed me for asking this question. I ask you. Would you re enlist in this current political climate? Would you fire on AMERICAN civilians? You know. Every other person who posts regularly on this board. Because guess what. If you won't Obama will find someone else who will.

Ashton, have you served your country, specifically in the military? Have you ever taken the oath of enlistment (or commission)? I'm guessing you have not. Perhaps you should read it. You will find there are commonalities with the oath of office the president and congress take. In it is a piece about defending the constitution against all enemies... foreign or domestic. While I respect anyone's opinion, I don't agree with your tone. Your line about watching TV instead of joining makes me think you're the kind of lazy piece of shit the military wouldn't want anyway....and as for being a slave... well that quite frankly is about as ignorant a statement as I would expect from someone who posts like you do. No offense, but most people on this forum, it would seem, understand what sacrifice, honor, and integrity mean. If Buddha has decided to volunteer for the military (you know it's an all volunteer force and has been since 1973), then it is a decision he has chosen. Slaves don't have a choice. Before you make another feeble attempt to paint the military in a bad light, consider that there are many of us here who serve or have served and we don't take that service lightly; nor will we tolerate some p.o.s. who disrespects what we have fought so hard to protect, as so many did before us. Just my .02.

From talking to my ex when she was going through, it's definitely a tough course. You'll get through basic and get sent to Ft. Benning for OCS, but you won't go right into the course. You'll be in holdover... people arrive from basic, from different units, etc. a week to a month or so before their class date... and you'll just sit there waiting for your class to start. While in holdover, they'll give you a PT test, and if you get under a 290, you stay there until the next class starts and try again. That's how it was for her anyway... the score cutoff might be different now than it was a year ago, but with the reductions they're making Army-wide I doubt its gotten any easier.
Its not the worst place to be as far as location goes. You've got all the gals going through Airborne school right next to you for when you finally get a weekend off, and downtown Columbus is always an... interesting... time.
Just don't fuck with the guys you see in the DFAC on weekends wearing 2-quart canteens slung over their shoulder, they all think OCS types are douchebags that aren't as tough as them and will gladly give you shit for it, if their Class Leader will allow it.

To the OP: I wish you the best of luck if you follow this path. There is no better calling than being a leader of men of honor and action. I was the rare combat arms NCO that completed his bachelors before enlisting and can tell you from first hand experience, being surrounded by mouth breathers all day will teach you to be a patient man.

I will say it. You have absolutely NO credibility saying this unless you have been there. This is NOT an opinion that can be read in a book or looked up on Google. Do not ever post any crap like this again or the fucking hammer comes out. GOT IT!!!!

And any smart assed reply will be dealt with. I can think of about 5 replies you might try so don't. Having BTDT I see the looks of the kids at the Meps station since I still serve my country. So that makes me a slave for the last 33 years? Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. [Bang]

Ashton...have you heard the old saying about better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth? If not, might wanna look it up. Then again, it might be too late.

20 years of proud & HONORABLE service as a VOLUNTEER in the USAF.
7 years retired from the USAF and there are times I miss the service and esprit de corps of serving with other volunteers.
7 years as a military contractor still trying to provide a service to this nation and it's people.


OP: Congratulations and you have my respect, even if you did choose the Army versus the USAF. Go make us & yourself proud!

Umm NY. then again you could go to ft snuffy smith or Lost in the woods etc. Do what you feel is best for you, no one else.

As for Ashton. He's the one who invited everyone to a bbq then skipped town, yes?

Go EOD. Officer pay plus EOD pay ($$$$). You'll see combat just as much as anyone else if you're concerned about it.
