That is the gasket for the oil cooler style. Through the alternator bracket. If it doesnt have the oil cooler it doesn't have the little bridge in the middle, but it is still in the same spot.

V8s in BMWs are always a pain. Straight 6 is much better.

I had a '72 Volvo with a straight 6. That thing was damn near bullet-proof and you could really wind it up.
