1988. I bought an AR-15 (SP1 with triangle hand guards, etc), to familiarize myself with it before heading to USMC boot camp. Turns out I didn't need the prep course, but it was fun to have anyway.
M16A1 in Dec 1980 also at Edson Range, Camp Pendleton CA.
