Because it requires a license from the state to be a "legal" marriage. Because the states choose which forms of "marriage" to recognize. Because states afford special permissions to "married" couples.

Whether a religious term or not, the government has injected itself into the union between people, and treats people differently via taxes in relation to their legal relationship status. By doing so, the term "marriage" is no longer solely a religious term.

You missed my original point.

I said the "term" of marriage.

The government is offering other titles like "domestic partner" or things like that, that have the EXACT same benefits, tax breaks, etc. Not across the board as of yet, but it is coming. However, these folks are "demanding" the title of marriage.

The term marriage will always be a religious term. The two cannot be separated simply due to the origin of the word.

I didn't miss your point at all. Marriage as an institution and "term" has been co-opted by government to mean "domestic partnership". It's been that way for many years. Hence "marriage license" and not "domestic partnership permit"
