Hey OBC. To be honest, I've never worn a hard hat. Besides, I don't think a hard hat would do much good during an 8mag+ earthquake. [Dunno]

The guy I saw to on my plane from DFW to Santiago was living in Santiago during the 2010 8mag earthquake, he thought they were going to die. He said there was seriously no doubt in his mind that that was their last day on earth.
