I hear you guys on the car parts. I'm rebuilding a 47 chevy coupe. I HATE going to the parts store. Looking for a electric wiper motor, what year sir? It doesn't matter small, its custom, what year custom sir? Just give a small wiper motor! Same with battery's. Its in my trunk dude, there- that one.

In a former life, I worked in a speed shop, and we really had to know our stuff. This was about the time when Checker and Autozone were just getting their computerized lookup systems, but we were old school with paper catalogs. I've gotten to the point where I just ask the kid behind the counter to hand me the catalog and look my own parts up when I need car parts. Or i just look the shit up on line and give them part numbers.
ETA: I still have a ton of the part numbers engraved in my brain. Mallory Unilite mechanical advance distributor for a Chevy V8 is a 3748201...Holley 830 annular discharge double pumper is a 0-9380....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuugh

I have been he ignorant kid behind the auto parts counter. It is kind of a loose loose situation. They computer does not have a way to look at individual components just make and model. I you don't give it that info it gets stubborn and won't move. I put a ford 9 under the back of my unlimited with a home made disk break kit and a high pinion 44 up front. I pulled make model enginge size and tranny and put it into a book then when I buy things I record the part numbers.
The worst experience I ever had at a dealership
me- I am looking for a crew cab 1/2 ton 4x4 with the big motor. Salesman- no problem I will pull some keys. I test drove 4 withe the wrong size motor I refused to drive a regular cab 6'2" 250 lbs and when I thought I found the right truck I drove it and the wife approved I went looking for the transfer case handle or switch an it didn't exist on that truck. What a waste of a day.
