Anyone in the Springs like Red Top before they went down? That was always my fav in the Springs. I can't believe they closed! Broke my heart.
Truth! I've worked all over the country and eaten damn near every kind of meal wrapped in bread there is, and the no-name joints are usually the best IMO. I grew up on burgers from one certain place in my hometown in OK and they're still the standard I compare all others to. I know another place in El Reno, OK that has killer burgs, stuffed with fried onions - OMG.....fried onions on a cheeseburger are heaven.Quote:
the best burgers are at little mom & pop greasy spoons and dive bars
Jim's Burger Haven in Thornton was the same way. Haven't been in years, so don't know.

I got to the Springs in '95 and we tried Red Top. They were really good back then. There was about a year period where I didn't eat there but when we went back we noticed a definite drop in quality and taste. We ate at one about a year and a half ago and found they'd continued to go down. We decided then that it would be the last time we ate there.
Only been once in the last ten years it was good burger but had lost the character of the place, back in the day tops in Denver.
Back in the 60's, 70's and early 80's in Commerce City, Ol Joes Shack, wasn't far from being an actual shack. Neighborhood favorite, not much of a neighborhood, but great burgers. The Super Maxi and family fries would feed family of four. Handmade 1+ pound burger patty, huge bun, whole tomato sliced, whole dill pickle sliced length wise, and 1/4 head of lettuce, hand cut potatoes with skin, fried perfect. Pretty much drive thru(used to cal ahead, that burger took alot longer to cook than the hockey pucks served these days) or carry out, only room for two tables and carry out window inside. Real dive, but great burgers and good times remembered.
When the grand kids ask what is was like when I was a kid, this is one of the ones I tell them.
