You wouldn't believe the rampant ignorance that circulated throughout the barracks on election night 2008... The loud mouths were proud to have the first black president, meanwhile, a few of us were able to look past color and say "Ah shit, there goes the country. We better keep tight lipped about this though, can't be criticizing our Commander in Chief." All the while kids were talking trash on W while he was in office... [Shake]
Not really. We used to call the Army "welfare in green" while I was on active duty in the 1980's. Far too many people joined for the steady job and did as little as possible to get by. One of the reasons why they went to civilian contractors handling a lot of the things around the military posts years ago. I'm not sure if it is swinging back to having military take back those jobs. I do see at Fort Carson that military personnel are taking back some of the range control jobs and MP's are back at the gates.
Political beliefs and reasons for joining aside, all of the Marines that I was ever around wanted to destroy the enemy and kill everything that we were allowed to. Nobody liked all the day to day bullshit, but anybody that truly didn't want to kick ass was weeded out in boot camp. The benefit of a fighting force of ~175,000 was that your reputation followed you and if you were a shitbird, you didn't last past your first enlistment. It blows my mind to realize that the whole Corps manpower wise could fit in three of the broncos stadiums.
Good thread
You would probably vomit from the stories I've heard in the difference between visits at Walter Reed with W and Obama... A friend of mine- who was in Walter Reed from 2008-2009 was visited just after his injuries by George W, then about 3 mos before he finally was discharged got to meet Obama. STARK differences- Obama was slightly disrespectful, pompous, and didn't act like he really gave two shits... W on the other hand, had his staff interrupt twice because he was chatting it up and wanted to meet with as many wounded warriors as possible- seemed like he genuinely cared in my buddies opinion.
