The cool flying tank video that the Army recruiters often show to recruits before they pick their MOS or in civilian terms job training. That video alone was the reason for more 19k Tank crew man.
I was in 1AD and after the video was shot tank was totaled. The propaganda film more paid for itself. The number of 19k's went to record level afterward. M1A1's should never get more than
12 inch of air otherwise the mechenics will hate you.
I watched the LASERDISK for 19D with about 20 fully rucked up Troopers rushing out the back of an older model Bradley, there were guys shooting M-60's blazing and at some point they were Scouts on Motorcycles........I can't recall ever riding a motorcycle in my 20+ years!!!
Ahhhh good times!
Agreed, should not get more than 12 inches of air. However, not realistic. My M1 routinely got several feet of air with no ill effects to the tank or crew. There are often bumps, ditches, obstacles that will cause the M1 to get a few feet of air. The bigger issue becomes the angle of approach and landing. The M1's suspension will take many magnitudes more abuse than the M48, M60 series tanks would ever dream of. Just going in a straight line down a paved road at 20MPH was a challenge in the old tanks. Cruising cross country at 40MPH in an M1 was just getting fun. I did my time in M48A5, M60, M60A1, M60A3 and finished on M1.
However, after emerging from smoke at 25MPH and immediately hitting a 5ft tall mound of earth, an M1 will require several new torsion bars, a few new track blocks and repositioning of anything not secured inside. The crew may require some stitches, dental work, attention to various other cuts, bruises, scrapes and reviving one or more crewmen from unconsciousness.
However, it could still communicate and shoot.
I miss the M1.
I watched 5 different MOS videos before I joined and despite being vague as hell, they all said the exact same thing "you'll work long hours in the field." My field experience was especially long when we had our FA unit 200m away... no sleep, I tell ya! [Coffee]
