I suggest ammo (OR) reloading items , food stuffs and ammo.
We're teetering on the edge of another 1929 and or 1989 collapse. Stocks are roller coasting , petroleum is down per bbl while pump prices stay (why) in the mid $3. range . Food prices have gone nothing but up.
Ebola seems to be popping up in densely populated / urban areas, yet no ban on flights from the dark continent.
If we leave the local area, we have more than 1 firearm to get us back to home base. It's not if it will happen, but when it will happen. YMMV
To be fair, I have also invested as much as I can afford to in ammo, reloading components, long-lasting food, home protection methods, and disaster preps such as plastic sheeting, good masks, gloves, etc. Just bought a decent radio. I'd really like to get another G19 to travel with. Similar to your and rbeau's comments, we have also changed the way we travel and the things we travel with if we are going more than a 2 hour drive from home. I had a very hard time dealing with the limitations of flying commercially back to Michigan 2 weekends ago. I felt very naked and helpless.
I haven't been to the office for nearly two weeks. Working at home is great and I especially like it now.
I need my wife to be able to do that. I only work 10 - 15 minutes away, but she has a long commute. Pretty much everything she does can be on the computer but they won't let her.
She got her carry license last year... still trying to find her a good carry revolver (it is what she wants), but it hasn't been real high on the pri list.
I don't need to go far from the home, so I don't. If I were to be more than 1 hour drive from home, it is more than my carry pistol that would come with me (Zombie Exsanguinators).
Me thinks this is the perfect time to be moving out of the city.
Wife and I both work 5 min from home. It's nice.
I wish. Perhaps when the current immense hurdle that I am trying to get through now is over and the egg donor and the system successfully turn me into only a paycheck I will be able to. But then I will be a whole lot poorer, and will probably need to move closer to Colfax Ave.
On a different note, silver is pretty much flat, I hope it goes down a little more before my next paycheck.
Continuing the off topic portion of the discussion...I used to fly every week. I was out of state 120 days in 2012. A VERY big reason I switched jobs to a local job last year was because I didn't feel comfortable being away from home any more due to the current geopolitical climate. Being stranded in another state due to some major "event" wasn't a risk I didn't want to take any longer.
On topic, I can't believe silver is still down. Everyone should take advantage of the current "sale". I prefer to buy local for cash. I pay a bit more over spot (a little less than $1 more for Eagles) than the online dealers like JM, but I don't want any transaction record. I consider that extra dollar an extra level of insurance to stay anonymous.
