Not bigger, but quite possibly better engineered in terms of safety(Mercedes owns Smart, and engineered pretty much all of their safety systems). Realistically, unless you're driving an MRAP, pretty much anything is going to come off second best going head on with a 50 ton tractor trailer rig. Even then, chances of being able to drive away are virtually nil.
I don't mind being seen in the Car2Go smart car, beats limping in pain during bad weather. Here I took this the other day: My mobility is nearly as big. Smart is more safe though.

People in Thornton must love smart cars. I've seen as many as 3 in 2hrs period there.
the fact is in a bad collision mass generally wins, the insurance institue states that in a massive collision the largest trucks and suv will continue forward in the collision pusshing the compact cars backwards and transferring most of the force of the impact to the person in the smaller vehicle.
