That's ones personal choice and not my problem. You want that piece of paper, you have to pay for it.
IMO the direction America is falling. Soon no one will need a degree or student loan debt. IF the Unions and ENTITLEMENT legislatures get their way. Everyone will want to work for the Clown, the King, or some small inbred dog. Why go to school when flipping burgers will start you @ $15 per. WITHOUT A $100k loan on ones back. [Mad]
SIGN ME UP.
WELCOME TO THE CLOWNS will that be paid for by Credit or EBT Card
My problem with spending that kind of money on a degree that will NEVER get you a job that can pay off the debt is that one of these days the student debt is going to become the next "housing crisis" and that will severely damage the economy even more.
How is writing a mortgage with no down payment for $300k on a house that's worth $225k considered a risky loan however writing an unsecured student loan with no down payment for $100k+ to pay for a degree that can only lead to a $25k a year job be considered an investment in the future of this country?
I'm going on the record here. The next bailout will be student loan "forgiveness" on a massive scale. Students far and wide are going to default on their loans and will have to be bailed out...the feds own somewhere just south of $1T in outstanding student loans...
EDIT: to add a few more scary figures. Student loan debt makes up 10% of the total consumer debt in this country. Total student loan debt is $1.19T. 11.5% of which is seriously delinquent past 90 days. Even though student loan debt is only 10% of the total consumer debt, seriously delinquent student loan debt totals 1/3 of ALL the 90+ day delinquent consumer debt in the USA.
However, only about half of the student loans are in repayment currently, so in actuality, 23% of the loans currently in repayment are delinquent past 90 days.
How are student loans even an option with that kind of risk?

The University of Missouri professor seen in a viral video trying to prevent a photographer from covering campus protests resigned her "courtesy" appointment with the journalism school on Wednesday -- however, university administrators were circling the wagons and not commenting further on her employment status within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Melissa Click resigned her courtesy appointment as journalism school faculty members were in the act of reviewing the appointment, the School of Journalism announced in a statement. The school noted that Click “never had a teaching role at the School.”
I think I've told this story before, but in case you missed it:
During one of my required social-based liberal arts courses, I was asked to write a paper about a topic of my choosing. The only requisite was that it addressed sexuality, gender or some similar social identifier. So I wrote about how the modern male had become emasculated. I made the point that in the 70s, working in a steel mill was enough to earn a man enough to live on and be comfortable with himself. Work ethic, local pride, and the ability to overcome physical and mental challenges presented in a hard-working environment were as much a payment as the salary. I then pointed out that nowadays "men" are rarely able to perform manual tasks, defend themselves, or be self-sufficient. Society encourages feminine dress, grooming, and behavior.
Worth noting is that this paper was to be read by all of my classmates, or read aloud to them at my discretion. I don't clam up from speaking in public (self-confidence is also quickly fading nowadays), so I elected to read it out. When I did so, not a peep was spoken to me, other than a former 03XX Marine giving me a "Nice, man." But before the next class, the professor pulled me aside and said that roughly half the class had complained to her AND the dean about my paper. This happened a few years back, so I wasn't expelled, however I can't imagine that I'd fare as well in 2015 with the new age of PC and Tumblr "activism".
Long story short, these social justice "warriors" didn't even have the guts to tell me to my face that they found what I said offensive. They had to run and find an adult to complain to because God forbid someone in a college environment says something they don't like.
I dont know what you all are worried about with student debt. Bernie will give everyone a college education for FREE!! Everything is FREE with BERNIE!
Not new but it has become an increasingly worse problem as government's funding of and role in "education" has increased.
Agreed. Not everyone has an aptitude for STEM subjects and the world would be very boring if everyone pursued STEM. J.R.R. Tolkien was a professor of English but his work has done as much as any engineer or scientist to bring lighten peoples' lives. I enjoy most of Spielberg's films even if I disagree with his politics. What irks me is people "studying" a subject that clearly has little practical utility then complaining that they can't find a job or that they make less than an engineer who probably spent 50-100% more time in actual study and hard academic work (or plumber/mechanic/electrician who paid his/her dues as an apprentice and journeyman to learn a skilled trade).
Unfortunately, it already has become the next bailout as Obama started the "free college education" mantra 2 years ago and Hillary is repeating this unaffordable nonsense. What the Dems really want is to keep their ideology mills corrupting impressionable minds.
What, no trigger warning? You evil male dominator! You clearly haven't absorbed the lessons of the 90s and 00s in acknowledging your privilege.
