Started coughing about bed time last night. Alas, I was not to escape this season unscathed.
I'm also better. Just two days of minor feel bads. Irving dodges the flu again.
My dad (a pediatrician) seems to think it's either H1N1 or Influenza B. Both of which are in this year's flu vaccine. He gets the shot every year as a healthcare provider, and hasn't had any issues. I've still self quarantined from him, as he's 90 years old. We'll catch up after the holiday.
What the ED's are seeing is mostly Flu A (92%) with H1N1 the predominant strain. Colorado Data matches national data at 92%. What's interesting is the number of ILI's that the ED's are seeing compared to actual diagnosed flu. The number of ILI's surpassed last years number with a rapid spike at the beginning of December, while the number of actual flu cases is well below last year. The data to come out this in the next day or so will be interesting. Most of the data so far is pointing to a fairly mild start. Let's hope it stays that way. Flu mortality (mostly from pneumonia) usually increases in the next month or so. We are seeing some sick people in the ED's right now.
Wash those hands boys and girls.
FWIW - Wife tried to find NyQuil at Sam's Club today. They were sold out.
I've been taking Mucinex DM to keep the nagging cough under control.
This is something that has been tracked in the past. Not sure if it still is, but I wouldn't doubt it. Syndromic Surveillance only applies to those who visit and ED or Doc's Office. For those of us, that refuse to go to the doctor and self medicate we get get missed in the surveillance. Why is this tracked? If you go to Target, Costco, Walgreens, etc. and they are sold out of "Cold and Cough" medicine, well there's your sign. If this happens in July, in a cluster, say one or two zip codes, that could a bio agent release. Even though we are very mobile now, we still usually hit the store close to our house, so it is a pretty accurate source of data.
