I don't think this is about Polis' political career and the likelihood that it will be overturned is irrelevant. This is a virtue signal by those who like to signal. Since e Colorado has done it, all the good leftists will want to catch up. We'll have to see how quickly the race to the bottom goes and what shenanigans will follow. Maybe Polis will still be the best candidate the left can run.

Democrats in the Washington state House on Saturday approved an overhaul of the state’s system for buying guns.
Under the legislation, prospective gun buyers would need to first apply for a five-year permit from the Washington State Patrol. To get the permit, applicants must have completed a certified firearms safety training program within the past five years, with exceptions for police officers and active military service members.
If the applicant has completed the safety course, the state would have to issue the permit unless the person is barred from having guns, out of custody on bond awaiting trial or sentencing on felony charges, or the subject of an arrest warrant.
Now we get to buy our right back.

What that tells you is the members of the legislature don't write their own bills or amendments. They get them from special interest groups who are the puppeteers behind the scenes. While I don't support the legislation, it was very apparent that he would sign it and guided the amendments, making it clear he would have vetoed the bill if it did not include provisions for people to "buy anything" after getting the card.
* I don't agree with the legislation.
* If he was showing his true colors / controlled by the D powers that be, I believe he would've supported the first draft (which flat out banned everything w/ a magazine)
* An AWB was a guarantee in Colorado, if not last year, this year, within five years.
* Through negotiations w/ Polis, they heavily neutered it.
* Yes, it is an overbroad piece of legislation affecting everything that uses a magazine. First-of-it's kind. Court challenges could be successful if lead by people that are not RMGO.
* Likewise, it's also a bit unusual and a first-of-a-kind among the commie states as it still lets everyone buy everything the day before its effective date - if they have a card proving they took training. (not registration / no database at this time) - Polis made it clear he would veto anything that actually blocked ownership w/o provisions to continue to buy.
Kind of like the Magazine ban with RMGO, we could've had a 30 round limit. This could've been a LOT worse. Thankfully we didn't have Dudley around demanding they pass it without amendments, this go around. Hopefully SCOTUS actually settles the debate soon.

ETA: I guess the TLDR is Polis is a democrat, but on the scale of his support for banning firearms, he's more to the right of any other candidate that could get elected to that seat today. I'm a pragmatist, we're not getting a pro-firearm conservative governor. I always keep in mind what will fill any vacancy that is left behind when advocating for the replacement of politicians.

The only leverage I have left is where and how I spend my money which generates CO State Tax revenue. I will be moving out of the state before the end of the year. I have also chosen to not make major purchases until after I move. I was considering buying a new vehicle. Not anymore while I still live in Colorado.

Ranges have always been an AARP convention. I think that the biggest thing is that pre 2000, or maybe 1990, gun ownership was highly linked to hunting. For good or bad, that has changed to people more interested in self defense and long range shooting- both without real links to hunting. That is an issue for hunting and wildlife management- but a much easier and sustainable base of gun ownership. I think it is driven by the rise of CCW and the GWOT/Video-game familiarity with ‘cool’ guns.

We're not seeing a lack of new people getting into guns - there is a resurgence of conservative/firearm interest in young men.
However, like every other hobby, it is becoming a rich mans sport. This is despite the price of most guns has actually dropped - a lot - from the comparative value of our youth. I'm talking not only inflation adjusted, but actual prices for things like ARs.
But ammunition has not had a price correction, essentially, ever. What used to be 10c a shot is now commonly $1 per shot. Many hunting rounds can be 3$ a shot. Shooting requires sending ammunition downrange, otherwise one is a collector, and the biggest factor is the disposable income of everyone (especially younger generations) has steadily been shrinking, compared to adjusted generations past.
Much like anything else - golf, skiiing, etc., only the reasonably well off can actually enjoy these hobbies. Young people can for a brief window of time on credit cards, but their housing expenses are often more like 50% of their income, even with roommates. Guys with gray hair have mortgages that were locked in 25 years ago... or houses that are paid off, as well as time to spend burning some money.
Make no mistake though... young men today proportionally are as interested in firearms as they ever have been, imho. As mentioned before, this is less about hunting and doesn't neatly fit the assumptions of prior decades.
