I'm not very good at working on cars. Last time I tried something like this, it took me the full week, then three more weeks after that. Then I sold the car.
Good luck. I am very close to buying a $1000 car for the commute... with a secondary goal of learning how to fix cars. Unfortunately, some hispanic cultural things around here make it impossible to find a beater for a fair price - everyone likes to buy all the '91 Honda Civics (and similar cars that should be in the $500-1000 range) for 2-3x what it should cost and then put another $2-3k into it for rims, exhaust, muffler, body work, etc... polishing up the turd.
