Yeah I read that and his math is sound, but if the money is going to be there for 30 years or more (which is the case for both of us at this point, because we're both at least 30 years away from 59.5) it almost always makes more sense to do a Roth, primarily because of the tax free growth. If you max your contributions to your and Mrs Irving's IRAs every year for 30 years, using the unimpressive 7% figure above, you will have basically made more than $700k in absolutely 100% tax-free income.
If you max your Roth and have money left over, then by all means, put it in good mutual funds outside of your IRA and let it grow alongside your retirement, but without the tax advantages. Alternatively, this is a perfect time to really diversify your portfolio in real estate or other types of investments.
If I'm wrong about any of this, please stop me, but I am 98% confident in my conclusions. If I am screwing up the math, or reading the tax law wrong, stop me now! -I am relying on these things for my future! hahaha

This thread has a lot of useless bullshit in it, but there is a metric shitload of really useful and productive information interspersed all throughout! [Beer]
I don't think you're wrong to go ROTH at all. Obesity thing I was confused about was the max contributions. It is $5,500 for any type of IRA, but he makes it seem like the $5,500 includes the taxes when funding a ROTH, and that's not the impression I was under. I didn't like the way he did the math on that part.
Yep, that's how irrational fears work.
Full disclosure - camera was clipped to steering wheel and set to timer and all posts/texts were made from shoulder parked to attach/detach camera or while parked in restaurant and gas station lot.
I did break the speed limit.
