i just checked a cycling site and those guys are saying that an amateur doing 30 on the flat (no tail wind or decline) is doing well

gears and training...mostly training...equipment only gets you so far and only the truly elite (tour de france rider) can really use the exemplary equipment and notice a different

imagine riding 6-8 hours a day almost every day at that pace (35-45mph for a professional) and doing mountains in all kinds of weather

they are incredibly fit

Well, I can't...lol The wif and I have been on those concrete trails along the platte, and over to the west a ways. Some dudes just fly by and they're gone, and I'm pedaling just as hard as they are.

those guys are dicks too - they shouldn't be flying down a trail like that - they will hit a child and that will be the end of their cycling for couple of years - they'll get out of jail and the seat will slide right up their bum
