If one chooses suicide by police as a political statement, less coverage may encourage a murderer to engage in an even more heinous act in order to gain the attention they seek.

There have been several studies done over the years by psych groups and they have all come to the conclusion that not releasing the names of the shooters would reduce the number of these types of events by possibly up to 70%. The researchers all pretty much agree that most of these events are copy cat events and by not releasing who they are most of the motive behind these shootings is removed. The media could easily band together just like they do in cases of rape or suicides and not report names.
That flies against the journalist tradition of "getting the scoop" by getting the details out before the competition does.
