I'm not saying saying Glenn should have done anything with whats-his-face. I'm saying there were several possible escape routes. Whoever was still alive should have been taking them. While now were ideal, they were all better than stalling out on top of a dumpster. I'll take a dense forest before over run dumpster any day.
Surviving the big hoard should be simple. Seems past episodes showed us that if you cover yourself with zombie blood and guts they cant detect you as being human and you simply walk among them.

Don't the newly-dead characters usually show up to talk in TTD right after they die?
Also, Glenn could probably play dead (or zombie) and escape covered in guts.

Well it looked like his guts were being ripped out, but his head was intact... I imagine we'll see Glenn again in a zombie horde, at one point or another.
