Stated in Penal Code 17235 and Penal Code 21510, California has strict laws regulating the sale and possession of switchblades.
Specifically, if a switchblade has a blade two inches or more in length, it is a crime to:

Possess the knife in the passenger's or driver's area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the public,

Carry the switchblade upon your person, or

Sell, offer or expose for sale, or loan, transfer, or give the knife to anyone else.1


California law specifies 2" or more as the cut off, hence why the 1.9" Kershaw is legal for carry in CA.

I got 5, so that I can carry. 3.5" < L . Also they are very ergonomic.
I think Launch 7 is longer.

I just got my Launch 4. It's replacing a Ken Onion Chive so size is just about the same but the handle is significantly thicker. The release button is very gritty feeling if you press it slowly but it feels like it's wearing in and getting smoother. This is my first auto so I can't say much for how it compares to others.

Pros:
I really like the small size.
It locks up tight with no play when open.
$69 and it feels like a quality knife.

Cons:
I wish it would have been sharper out of the box.
I wish it came with a "deep carry" clip so it would sit lower in my pocket.
Button is not smooth.

I still really want one of these, a good California friendly option for when we visit the in laws.

Fortunate to have my first auto be the the one I've wanted more than any other. Benchmade 3551.

Is it as great as you'd hoped so far?

This knife in particular is really great, but autos in general aren't as extravagant as the hype makes them out to be, still pretty cool tho.
