They've been trunked for a long while now, but yes, encryption starts in a couple of weeks. Sucks, but oh well. There's a guy I work with on scanners and I spoke with him the other day...I'm gonna get a new Uniden (I think it's the SDS100) but he programs them in a cool way to separate the different agencies and enables lock outs for shit you don't want to hear. If I gave the right model number, I can take that scanner anywhere in the country an lock in on stuff with a zip code, it's all loaded into the device already. It's pretty cool.

I don't think I can swing the guys at (@&$%) to give me an assigned pass code to a $2K portable. I'll ask 'em though...:)

There are a few websites that offer listening to that kind of traffic. That also depends on your connectivity level wherever you're at. If you have an actual radio, I don't see that being an issue.

No. First it was trunking, which made almost all scanners obsolete.

Now they are encrypting, and that's like a death shot into understanding (scanning) your immediate vicinity.

Another aspect to just listening to a zip code assigned App...is you get to hear a lot of stupid shit like parks and rec, public works, and the like. The lock out aspects in the scanner make that go away....perhaps the phone app does as well? Dunno.
