SAR-2 ?

It's not a 7.62 but it is an AK so I posted here.

I have a chance to pick up a Romanian SAR-2 (imported by Century I believe) and was wondering if anyone has any good info on these. From what I can gather there were actually assembled in Romania and not cobbled together by Century. It has some crappy aftermarket stuff on it but I plan on scrapping all of that and putting it back to normal or maybe swapping out some more tasteful stuff instead.

I know now there may be some surplus ammo shortages in this caliber in the near future but it looks like I can still find plenty of ammo for now at about 22 cents a round so I can stock up.

I had an SAR-1 that was pretty decent....iirc the barrel wasn't threaded, the bayonet lug was shaved, and it had the slappy romak fcg, but the barrel was chrome lined, accuracy was decent, and the function was ak reliable. I forget how to tell if the receiver is the original Romanian one....something to do with the rivets iirc.

Now that I think about it, we had an SAR-3 for a while too....that was a pretty fun one too - basically the same thing in 5.56. Man, the things i wish i wouldn't have sold looking back (or at least, wish i would have sold for more :p)

If the price is right buy it. Of course replace the trigger (must have) and what ever else is offending you. I have some nice refinished 74 wood furniture from bobbyZ if you want to maintain true AK looks.

SAR 2's are basically a WASR in 5.45x39.
Personally I think they are built a bit better built than the WASR, probably because they were "the new caliber" at that time for the Romanians.
Good shooters and most of them have a side rail for a scope mount.

If you do get one that was neutered you can find the parts easily to bring it back to milspec-I think APEX might have them in stock.

I had 2 of them in the past..both with canted front sight. I just torched and hammered it close to 90 degree, and they shot straight (Jim or bob will prolly kill me after reading this). They are beater gun imho. They were going for dirt cheap few years ago. Lately, they have been going for $500-600.

Sar series were descent guns. The one thing they have going for them is they have a commie made chrome lined hammer forge barrel. Like c monkey said make sure it dosent have canted sights. Don't over pay for it I would say 550$ tops especially if they tapco fucked it.

Sar 2's are actually the least common of the sar series, it is a front sight block and muzzle device away from being a semi auto aims-74 (the Romanian ak74 basically) it does have a specific front sight block with 22mm threads instead of 24mm like the russian/german/bulgy 74. They were imported with front sight blocks that had the threaded section cut off. Up until a year or two ago kvar sold the correct Romanian 74 front sight with threads but are now sold out, they are hard to find but the barrel can be threaded 1/2-28. In my opinion the sar series is much better than the wasr's they seem to have better fit and finish and they have magwell dimples on the receiver unlike the wasr-2. If you get it and are unhappy with it I would gladly entertain trading for it. Correct wood for a sar2 is the orangish blond hard wood with a palm swell LHG correct for a 74 is a push button folder, light honey colored donky dong and a Bakelite upper or if you can find it there was the experimental Bakelite lower handgaurd but they are rare as hens teeth and expensive. Also romanian steel 30 round mags are fairly rare and pricey but tantal mags are very similar, also they accept all ak74 mags that I know of.

And part of the least common was just a matter of timing. When they were cheap ($189) and plentiful there were no mags or ammo for them. That is why I went SAR3. Then after they dried up Ohio had mags for $3 each if ya bought 12. I bought a bunch and later made a killing.

I always thought the quality of the SAR series was way above the WASR and the SAR seemed cheap compared to my FEG. I remember the unfinished wood and the overall quality of the latter was very bad. I still have one of my SAR 3's and will never part with it.[Flower]
