Shark.
Dyson is over rated
Milwaukee cordless m18 shop vac? Call it dual purpose
I'd have to say Shark too. Our new smaller upright is a shark, works as good as the $300 old kenmore.
Shark, hands down. The vac to hand held is the best.
Grew up with Kirby but too big and bulky.
Shark. You will not regret it, and their customer service is top notch.
We've got a Shark and it easily keeps up with two Border Collies and a 10 year old. If I remember correctly, it wasn't that expensive either.
Are you recommending a specific Shark or are they all top notch. I am looking at the Shark SV75Z 15.6 volt, Cordless/Handheld.
This is what I have.

I have to jump on the Shark bandwagon.
We also have a Dyson DC15 that we've used for a few years and thought it was great. After moving into this new house and realizing that they previous owners may have never actually vacuumed we went over it several times with the Dyson and picked up a ton of dirt/dust (I think it's mainly made of of carpet deodorizer) we went over until we stopped getting much up. Since it was so bad we decided to swing by Costco and see if a new vacuum would do better (knowing we could return it if it sucked... or failed to suck). The first time over the carpet with the shark was unbelievable. I think I posted a picture here somewhere but it was really disgusting what was left in the carpet by the Dyson. Now the Dyson was a couple years old and the shark was new but I don't think it should have made that much difference.
