Attempted break in

The police have just left my home.

My wife and I were awakend tonight by alot of noise comig from our garage. I imediately retreived a firearm from a safe located near our bed. There was still noise coming from the garage. After checking on my children still asleep in thier beds I relised this was not a family member making the noise. I redied my firearm and went towards the sound. the noise had now moved to the door of my garage. There was someone on the other side prying at my locked door. I responded. I raised my firearm and opened the door. I did not recognise the person. I started yelling comands at the person. "Who are you, get down on the ground let me see your hands drop what is in your hands" I dont remember verbatem what I said. I was shouting commands while telling my wife to call 911. This person complied, but was obviosly under the influnce. For what seemed like along time I shouted at this person who was now face down on the steps. He kept talking and would not comply with my comands of "Shut up the police will be here". He said somthing like"I didn't mean to hurt you" I was not concerned with his statements. I have A family of six And protecting them was all I was concerned with. Instinctavly I asked him if there was anyone else with him. I then moved to see if there were. The police arived. My wife was on the phone and at the front door advising. She told me they had pulled up. She told me they were coming to the door. I told her to tell them I was clearing my firearm and placing it on the counter. They went to my wife who pointed towards the threat. Then towards me as I pointed. One officer went to the threat while I said to another officer "I found him trying to break into my house".They hand cuffed him and took him outside. They asked me to sit, my wife went to check on the kids. The police searched my backyard and home for anyone else. There wasn't anytone. They told me that he was very intoxicated, and that they were going to talk with him and let me know what they were going to do. I was shaking. The officer said "you look like your upset" I said "I never thought I would have to use my firearm to defend my family" he said "you did nothing wrong". I am a vetern and never hesitated, this was different. They told me later that the person had mental problems on top of be intoxicated. They heard several stories from him but none that would explain why he was trying to get into my house. He is being charged with first degree criminal tresspass, a felony.

You did good Will glad everything turned out ok. Was it a full moon last night? About 8pm I get a call from my alarm company saying that several zones at my shop are going off. I tell the lady I am on my way as soon as I get my mossburg 500 out of the safe. She asks what I am driving so she can tell the police I am not a bad guy.

It turned out to be a false alarm the two Denver PD officers were great but crap like that is not fun.

Good job Will. It's always a scary having to pull a weapon, and thank God, more often than not, the mear presence of the weapon is enough to defuse the situation. I don't think you could have handeled it better if you'd have known it was coming. Really great work, and instincts on both your part and your wife's, for staying on the phone and relaying what was happening to you. You two are a great team!
