Been arguing this for years ... recently I've noticed blacks all upset about the 3/5ths compromise ... for the love of God our public education system is broken.
They are all POd about the fact that evil white folk only valued blacks at 3/5 a person and should have respected them by valuing them as a whole person.
I guess they WANTED slave owners to have more seats in Congress and more electoral votes ... without the 3/5ths compromise Lincoln would have lost to Douglas (for the public school educated that means blacks would have remained slaves and slave owners would have had a LOT more power). But hey, at least these black slaves could be happy knowing they wasn't bein' dissed by the honkeys.
Yawn
The evolution of today's political parties is very complicated. The definition of Democrat back in 1800 looks nothing like it does today, same thing for Republican. "Always" is a lousy word to use when you want to prove any point.
Today's democrats started moving "left" in the early 1900s, while the republicans started moving "right" by today's definition of left and right. Originally, they were founded as a unified group to oppose the Federalist party.
Parties are not monolithic. The role and positioning of parties has changed many times. Republicans were also founded on a policy of strict protectionism, now Republicans will free trade with anyone. Not a good comparison.
Democrats also were mainly in the KKK and/or leaders of the KKK.
I guess if I was concerned with the Democrat v Republican bitch-fest this would be pertinent information. Too bad the problem is WAY bigger than that yet it appears to be all people care about these days.
