Just got nailed going 15 over. 4 points and 169 bucks. If I just send the money it is 2 points. Two things are clear to me after this.
1) I really need to register this car, been driving it for three months now with no plates and I just narrowly missed getting it impounded today.
2) Clearly what saved me previously on speeding tickets was the Ooh-Rah Marine Licence plate I had. Back to point one.
Meh, I will take care of it next week. Never put off tomorrow what you can put off today.

If you go to court and speak to the assistant DA you can likely have the ticket reduced to 0 points if you agree to go to traffic school.
if you speed a lot do yourself a favor and buy a valentine one radar detector when i used to speed it saved me SO many times

One small problem I see here- you mailed it in, so too late for that, but people seem to always do that because they see it could be a good thing to just take the reduced points. 9/10 times the ADA will work with you if you go to court (not to fight it)... Since working in the insurance world I've been lucky to not get popped (knock on wood) but I learned that regardless of what the offense is (unless it's a major- 20+, reckless, etc) it's still a moving violation and will make your insurance rates go up, so I intend to go to court and ask that if they're going to reduce it to a 2 pt ticket, make it a non-moving violation so my insurance doesn't go up on me. Win-win either way, they get their money (which is really what they're after) and your insurance doesn't get dicked up. My advice, try for illegally parked or something trivial like that.

I got a ticket about a year ago going 69 in a 45 mph construction zone. The cop was "nice enough" to mark the ticket at 59 in a 45 construction zone to reduce my double fine fee to $400 and some odd dollars. The trouble I had with the ticket was the construction zone wasn't marked on the side of the road I was traveling. The construction was 4 lanes and a median away, off the shoulder, on the opposite side of the highway. I would gladly slow down for safety, but I had no idea I entering a construction zone and there were no signs.
I went to court and told the ADA my side of the story. He said, you know you are about the 6th person to tell me a very similar story, all tickets from the same cop. How does defective windshield, no points, sound instead? I took the non-moving violation in a heartbeat.
Now if I felt like I really deserved the ticket I might take a different approach, but I think the courts will work with you to reduce fees and points either way.

3. When I was 18 I got a ticket for 96 in a 55. It was $220. The ticket Monday was for going 36mph....and I certainly didn't think I deserved it, I was just cruising with my wife and kid and waving to a cop...
4. My neighbor got busted for 90 in a 55 and driving erratically...He gets let off. He gets busted for going 85 in a 55, it's a $40 ticket, no points... IN A 1 TON.
Speaking of points...how do they work?
I've never gotten a point before, no idea how they work, what they mean, when they go away etc.
The points work for a 2 year period. They are as follows:
Age 16-18=6 points in 1 year, 8 points in 2 years.
Age 18-21=8 points in 1 year, 12 points in 2 years.
21+=12 points in 1 year, 18 points in 2 years.
At least that's how it was when I was getting my first hand experience. :) The younger bracket may be different now with all the young driver laws.
I hear that. It took one 26 point ticket to break me of speeding. The only time I'll cross the speed limit is if I'm passing someone and that rarely happens as I'm usually doing 2-3 under the speed limit.Quote:

Was it the Sheriff's dept who clocked ya? You gotta watch those business parks over in DTC and Centennial areas. My wife got clocked doing 47 in a 35 over in the Centennial Technology Place by a Sheriff's deputy (Sheriff's dept is in the same technology area just south of there). He was parked just on the other side of a hill so nobody could see him while driving up the hill and they are picking up speed going down the hill before they notice him. No excuses... she was speeding and got caught. It just sucks because it was her last week of rotations in that area. Oh well.Quote:

When I was working the roads I never was "nice" and wrote a lower speed. It's falsifying a government document doing so. I know some cops do it to be "more friendly", but screw that...I left it up to the person if they wanted to go to court and the lawyers to plea it down. Just wasn't worth it to me.
31 MPH over is Reckless Endangerment in NV and it means vehicles are impounded and people wear bracelets. He may not have wanted to deal with that, or he may not have gotten any lazer or radar on us and was taking a swag. He didn't ask how fast we were going, we didn't say. He yelled at us about racing and wrote the ticket. Honestly I have no idea how good a radar signal you could get on two bikes coming at you while you are driving 70 and they are driving 170 for a closing speed of 240 mph, and getting a read on speed when they are oncoming like that is a bit tricky as well.Quote:

Radar is a big cone shapped beam and Lidar is a small straight beam. I couldn't even begin to count the number of tickets I wrote to people with "good" radar detectors. If you wanna know you're about to get a ticket, a radar detector is a great tool.

I've been known to follow people for substantial distances along Hwy 285 in the middle of the night with the little red and green lights of the detector (usually mounted on the windshield underneath the mirror) clearly visible through the back windshield. It's fun to hang back a ways as their speed is around 15 or 20 over and tap the trigger on the radar gun for just a "blip" of energy. The detector in the cars would light up like a Christmas tree, the driver would slow down until he thought it was "safe" and the speed would gradually creep back up. Tap the radar again and repeat. It was great fun...especially explaining how I'd been following them for several miles.
There are some things I miss about law enforcement.

Less than a year ago... There I was hauling ass down this road, speeding like a bat outta hell, cop finally catches up to me and writes me a citation. 39 mph in a 35 mph in a non school zone. Hadnt received a ticket in 8+ years. Yeah that's right, I'm a bad mother fvcker!
