I worry about a freighter off the coast shooting a missile into our outer atmosphere and EMPing us back to the stone ages. Can't tell you why on that one either, but the relationship between North korea and Iran has been in the news in the past.

Along the same lines, I worry about North Korea putting a nuke in orbit and EMPing us. They successfully put a satellite into LEO and it passes over the United States several times a day.... What if that was just a nuke with solar panels and an antenna?

I thought the EMP scenario like in One Second After would take a ridiculous number of nukes in LEO to achieve the same effect. Or are you talking about a single nuke taking out some geostationary satellites?

One in the right place (outside the atmosphere) would take out 1/3 to 1/2 the country. We no longer make industrial size transformers and these would most definitely blow from the strike. Last I read, 6 months minimum to replace them.

Three in the right places and the country, most of Canada, and some of Mexico are done...

Ultimately, nobody really knows for sure except for some obscure information from an "accident" that occurred in Russia back in the 80's (or was it the 70s). Most of that info is under lock and key in Russia.

I'm going to get some 3-gallon water jugs tomorrow for the basement.

Nope. As SA Friday said, one in LEO would send about 1/3 to 1/2 of the continental US back to the 1800s. if a nuke went off in orbit our geo satellites would be the last thing we'd worry about... 60% of all satellites would be instantly turned into space junk, and none of the rest would be able to communicate for a while because of something called scintillation.

You guys are better than Google news....I try to keep my eye on "foreign" media sources to get a sense of what is truly going on.

I developed a serious disgust for the American media when I was working in Israel. Flipping through the US news channels and the international channels it became really obvious that we spend literally all of our time focused on completely inconsequential nonsense and ignore events that actually have international implications.

Ironically EMPing us back wouldn't take us back to the stone ages, just to the 1950s ... which might end up being just the thing we need to roll back the surveillance/police state and restoring liberty.

You do realize that had Zimmerman been convicted, his conviction would be the first shot and rallying cry for the movement to roll back CCW, Castle Doctrine and Stand your Ground laws. Agreed the Zimmerman trial was huge for CCW and the 2nd. My thoughts while one thing is happening and all eyes are elsewhere it seems that these potentiality huge events arise and they dont get the attention they deserve. If Obamas team informed CNN that Israel was responsible that is huge and should be a major story. That is throwing our allies to the wolves but also brings the middle east to a flashpoint. Quite frankly I was never an end times person but there is so much happening that one cant keep track of anything.

Also Z, If (and only if) the ENTIRE continental US was EMP'd, I would argue that it would take us back further than the 1950s. Probably closer to the 1930s in some regards, and back into the 1800s in others. The whole power grid, distribution of food, fuel and other resources, as well as nearly all communication would be down for months, if not a year or more. All of our manufacturing uses technology that would go "POOF!" in an EMP. We would be starting a lot of things from scratch.

If it was just one part of the continental US, then we would be mostly back up and running withing a few months, but things would be awfully ugly in the meantime.

I see what you're saying and definitely don't deny it. But (and this isn't sarcasm) why did obummer-administration leak the Israeli info to CNN on purpose? It's obvious why they would leak details of the Seal raid to kill OBL: so they could look like The Good Guys to puff up their reelection campaign. But what could they stand to gain by throwing israel under the bus like this?

Just havin fun here (no need for such tight tin-foil hats): I wonder about the implication of our current circuitry turning to shit. Is Asia (aka China) the only place where we can get the parts that actually break in an EMP event? I can totally see us being put back into the 1950's (best case scenario according to you) and then China looking at their now-solid, undisputed #1 position and saying "Ummmm no thanks, no deal" and not giving us any hardware, especially because all we give them now is debt, right?

ETA: I tried to find *anything* about the Israeli attack on the missiles on FoxNews, CNN, etc and can't find anything. Just RT (look at AlJaz and stopped there).

I still contend that the effects of EMP weapons are grossly over stated. An EMP weapon (especially a single weapon) is not going to turn America into the world depicted in Dark Angel and certainly not Revolution. I did a bit of research on this when I bought my Jeep ('70 CJ5) as I wanted to make it into an EMP proof survivor vehicle and basically all I have to do is not be driving it directly under the blast zone at the instant the EMP weapon goes off ... and if I do, just replace the points, condenser and maybe battery and I'll be fine.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this thread with EMP discussion. But here's one little article on the subject.

Don't forget the diode pack in the voltage rectifier circuit in the alternator..........

It's hard to say for certain how much effect an EMP will have when there is so little publicly available and well documented research out there.

I think this forum at times is a microcosm of society as a whole. How much of the GZ thread is actually substance ?
