Walmart - Stupid People Rant...

RANT...
Ok, yes, I frequent walmart a couple times a week. I usually stop by the sporting goods counter to check on the ammo availablility and prices when going to purchase more food stuff.

A couple weeks ago there was a nice, clean cut gentleman and his teenage son there looking at ammo. Babbling about how it wasn't the right stuff for their gun and was asking the clerk for help. The clerk was obviously no help. Not being able to take the stupidity any longer, I asked the guy what he was looking for. "I need some 22 low velocity lead ammo." Lead? I asked? Yes, we have an antique gun and It won't take the high velocity ammo and I don't want to shoot plated bullets in it. With limited stock on the shelf of anything really, about all the had was the normal 50 round packs of plated 22's. He started looking at the 22 magnum shells, these should work, they are smaller 36 grains... Sir, you don't want to use those unless your weapon is marked as using that caliber... well these are smaller though! You obviously don't know what you have or need. I gave up trying to explain it and walked away.

Just this weekend, same thing, stopped by the area to check on prices. A younger clean cut couple was there, trying to find some "bullets" and the clerk was not assisting properly. Some other redneck was trying to help, but he was pointing them toward high power rounds. They had just bought a "ruger rifle" at the pawn shop and were waiting on the background check which was 3 hours. They wanted bullets for it. They had no idea what they bought, other than it was a ruger rifle. He finally mentioned it was a 1022 or something like that. Reluctantly I pointed them towards the 22 long rifle shells. Assuming you didn't buy the Magnum version, these are the "bullets" you need. The redneck chimed in with "all I know is the ammo I need for my 3080 I have at home..." uh yeah dude.

what the ? is a 3080? I had to leave the area, I'm no gun expert, but are there that many people out there buying this stuff without a clue?

I'm a little scared of these people attempting to use these arms without any education about the equipment. Good news is that maybe the guns won't function with the wrong ammo...

maybe I need to get a job at walmart... do they give discounts on ammo to employees?

I was Walmart yesterday and they actually had some .38spl. As I stood in line I heard the guy in front of me ask if they had any .357 and clerk said no. Then the guy started telling me he just bought his first pistol and wants to practice more at the range, so I told him to buy the .38spl and practice with that! The guy was nice but insisted on .357, oh well more ammo for me!!

I thought 357 sig and 38spl are different calibers... I know that the 357 Magnum is identical to 38spl.

I was at Gander Mountain and some kids brought the magazine of their .380 auto into the store and were putting a round of .32 in there to check fitment. The kid said, "Well, it fits in the clip easy enough, but it's smaller."

I told them, that is a really bad idea to try and shoot the wrong caliber round out of a gun. He looked at me and said, "yeah I know..." but it was clear he was going to try it anyway because they couldn't find any .380 Auto. Dumbass. I should have given him my number and told him I'll buy his gun off him for cheap after he destroys it.

WalMart is sooo cool. Think of the memories your getting everytime you enter the door. Everytime you go in it is an adventure. I hope to become a door greeter when I get older!

We should all get together and write our congressperson recomending they create laws to ban the sale of ammunition and guns so that nobody gets hurt.

Recent bumper sticker sighting: "Stupid should Hurt".

This thread is the reason i avoid public shooting venues on weekends.

Having worked for a little bit on the "other side" of the counter, I can say that it seems nothing is more prone to testosterone based posturing despite the fact the person knows absolutely nothing. Even worse than that is the person who knows just a little bit. Everything from "12 gauges are more accurate because they are bigger than a rifle round" - as advice on why not to buy a .308 rifle, to "I usually hunt from about 800 yards" as advice on why a tasco scope is needed on that 10/22, to "a 45 would bounce off of you after 50 feet" on why a 1911 isn't too dangerous and a poor choice for self defense.

Main thing is that now I won't offer any advice unless I am specifically asked by the person. Up to that point my opinion isn't wanted (even if it is needed) and I am happier pretending I barely know what the dangerous end of the gun is. Too often if you break that first rule you end up getting frustrated or hearing about how this guys uncle shoots accurately over a mile at quarters with an AK while standing on one foot on the hood of a moving car.

I am so sympathetic. I really try hard not to be the guy who sticks his nose in, but...

I heard a guy saying that he needs all the .308 brass he can get so he can reload his 30-06 for cheaper... wow... i think he was thinking 38spc for his 357? I was amazed on that one! [Bang] Unfortunately there are way too many Walmart Special Forces Warriors out there... Just gotta sit back, and try not to giggle when you read about that guy in the paper!

the other one i love to hear is guys thinking the the more grains it says it is on the box, the hotter load it is! "oh i was shooting some 350 grain hotloads out of my .44 the other day! that thing is a wrist breaker!"

There are chamber inserts for the .308 to '06,,, So that could be done..

However the "cheaper" I don't know..

Honestly I don't know what is worse.

The poor dumb schmucks that work at WalMart, or people that expect high school dropouts making a hair above minimum wage to give you the kind of service you get in a high end boutique.

What makes you think that people in a high end boutique aren't high school drop outs?

His point was that someone working in a boutique is more likely to know what they're talking about.

Need to stock up on 22lr value packs and maybe another 1k in 9mm

I worked at dicks sporting goods in longmont for about 6 months behind the gun counter. I learned more about guns that i never knew existed than i ever thought was possible. I had a guy come up and was mad that we didn't have any ammo for his .34 auto he bought at grandpas pawn. I had people tell me about there 1400 yard shots on deer and how they're granpas old rifle could shoot 1 inch groups at 1 mile, i even had one man come in looking for a double barrel shotgun for polar bear since he was going on a cruiseship to alaska and was worried about them swimming up to the boat. It was a very entertaining time. But hey the customer is always right!

.357 SIG is entirely different from .357 magnum (the SIG round is a bottleneck, rimless case intended primarily for semi-autos; magnum is a tapered wall, rimmed case intended mostly for revolvers).

HOWEVER, .357 magnum and .38 special ARE NOT IDENTICAL!!!!!!!!

For starters, the magnum round has about triple the pressure and is 1/10 inch longer than the special case. That's why you can fire a .38 from a .357 gun, but NOT vice versa.

My buddy's uncle's brother in law's nephew told him they're the same, and he would know because he used to be a secret black ops special forces commando sniper before he was retired medically after injuries received on a classified hostage rescue mission in desert storm and had to take that job as a security guard at the mall.

I always wondered why in the users manual it said to only use the ammo the gun was designed for. I couldn't even imagine using something else. It is more asburd than substituting gear oil for engine oil or diesel for gasoline.

No. That's the recommended age of the user. That number on the BULLET is the number of grains of powder it has. There is an equation the smarter people know that tells you what bullet to use based on your age, IQ, number of grains and how far you want to shoot. Geez, I thought everyone knew that.

Also, corporate was working on a tracking program so that if a firearm they sold was used in a crime, the original person that bought it would not be allowed to buy from them again. So if it was stolen/sold and used later, they consider you a criminal.....
