RATON's "Sporting Rifle Match"

With only 3 hours of sleep before the match added with the 3+ hour drive (Thank you TimK for the ride!) and weeks of dreading the day to come with anxiety, excitement, blah, blah, blah... okay.. so I was kinda sh*tting bricks on this [Coffee] It's my first "Shoot and scoot" (<I don't remember the order [ROFL1]) match. So what did I think about the match? I will let the pics speak for itself [Beer]

There were 2 or 3 stages where I only hit air or ground and cleared the stage with ZERO hits [ROFL1]
There were 2 or 3 times that I shot at the wrong target and wrong distances [LOL]

The dope on my rifle sucked ass in some of these stages and worked for the very few [facepalm]

Through the hikes... I was staring at things on the ground wondering if I could eat that [ROFL2]

.. and I got dirty [LOL]

and I actually hit 27 out of 60. [Beer]

I've seen worse than 27 down there. It can be a humbling place for sure. Looks like there were a lot of guys down there.

I've seen guys clean a stage by getting all six, then zero the next stage. It can be a frustrating place, but when it all comes together......

I really do encourage a lot of you guys out there to come out and try this. My first stage I didn't hit anything was a real kick in the balls for me...
I started thinking what the f*ck over?!
Is it my rifle?
My dope on the rifle?
... nagh... can't be the ammo..
F*ck?! Did I screw that shot up?
Oh dear Jesus... everyone saw that!?

The squad I was in are a bunch of awesome guys! They helped me chill the f*ck out along with many other things!
This is certainly something like the P-dog matches with having everyone helping each other out with what they can.

Thats one of the reason I like long range shooting. Almost everyone you meet is pretty cool. Highly UNlike some other forms of competitions out there.

I had a great time yesterday as well. With my mildly screwed up but on the mend shoulder and only having marginally appropriate rifle/scope combinations in the safe I decided to just go down there and watch/walk the course, and help keep score for the learning experience and to decide if this is something I really want to get into or not. I hooked up with Mike, Tim, and Matt and traveled the course with their squad for the match. I had an absolute blast just watching and learning from all the guys in that group. Everyone was really cool and helpful and didn't give me too much grief for showing up without a rifle [Flower]

Oh and you'll be glad to know I've taken the bait hook, line, and sinker. I ordered a pair of Krieger Barrels last night from Bruno's and am currently starting the hunt for the Action and AICS chassis.

This is gonna be awesome [rockon]

Looked like a majority of the rifles there are AR platforms? I've always wanted to get into something like this, am used to smallbore target shooting but windage (usually) isn't quite as much of an issue over 50 feet (even with 36-40 gr .22 bullet). I've got a scope mount for my M-1A NM that I haven't installed yet (and need to get a scope for it if I do) but am wondering if I'd need to change platforms.

Smaller than 6MM is not allowed by the rules . The majority of the guns are bolt action rifles with a detachable magazine conversion or in a chassis system . All the info is in the match thread and on the website .

Not at all. Most everything is a bolt gun. I had one guy in our squad shooting a 260 armalite and a few we're training for a up coming team match. A lot of 260 Rem's, 7 & 6 mm variants. Just a handful of 308's. 90% - 95% bolt rifles

Brother.. if you haven't tried this yet... it is a must!
As this was one of the hardest kind of shooting I've ever done... and when I mean hard.. I don't mean physically challenging. What was hard for me was adjusting for a lot of things in that 3 minute time limit like, shooting positions, how to deal with winds blowing not just on flat ground but up or down a hill or ridge, trees, beside that fricken house... and then trying to adjust that hit or miss as you go out to further targets. I've never shot like that before... and I'm not certain I learned anything out there to improve my shooting as far as where the rounds will end up, but i learned a hell of a lot with unconventional shooting positions (that I need to practice), and how to watch out for changing environment. The guys on the squad I was in are all a bunch of AWESOME guys!!!! I'm pretty sure all the shooters are the same way one way or the other.. all in all... Yes! You need to do this match! [Beer]

Interesting.

I ran into some of these guys at the TSA firearms inspection at DIA. Fortunately for me, I beat them all to the screening by just a few minutes or I would have been screwed making my flight. First time I checked my carry. I'm sure they would have let me bump the line considering the pile of rifle cases they had stacked up. Didn't have time to strike up a conversation, but know they were in Raton by all the schwag they were sporting.
