SUV
I got a 2006 4runner. Love it.
I like the 4runners.
Rav 4. One of those ( sport futility ) vehicles. I used a R4 for a trip. Damn thing handled great, mpg was impressive, depending how much shit you want to take. They or others of that style may or, May not work.
Rent 2 - 3 units, to see what works, before buying.
Jim, I've tried the rav4s. We are looking for midsized SUV. The r4 is just a little too small for us
I'm partial to older truck style stuff with a frame and v8, but crappy gas mileage.
My dad has a 06 4Runner v6 that is great, but tops out at 20mpg and has all kinds of electronic nonsense.
Some friends have newer jeeps that get terribad mpgs with the v6, hemi with the cylinder cutoff does better.
What kind of gas mileage are you looking for?
Anything better than my old expedition
Xterra or last gen 4Runner would be my suggestions. Xterra you can still find 6 speed manuals supposedly.
Yeah xterra is my main dream. Just finding one in our price range
I got a 99 two door Tahoe for my SUV. Got a great deal on it but it's the 5.7 motor and it gets 14-15 in town. If I drove it more I would look for something diesel or a v6. Those 4 runners are pretty sweet!
Xterra all the way.
I'm on my second one, and love it.
Had a 2007, got rid of it and went through one of the new Jeeps and a Hummer with the adventure package.
Went back and got the Off-road Xterra at the end of 2010. It's as good on the trails as anything out there.
All the current ones since 2005 have the 265 hp engine, and will get up and move.
With the rear seats down, you can stuff 4x8 sheets of plywood in the back if you need to, so plenty of room.
Peak Kia in littleton has an Xterra for about 14 it was an 05 http://peakkia.com/inventory/details...leton-co/27540 was just there last night, and no I do not work there.
I hear ya on it sucking. I need to get my truck sold an then find a Cherokee in decent shape.
I will mirror the 4 runner recommendations, specifically late 90's early 2000 with the 3.4 motor. I'm only basing my opinion from my 02 Tacoma, but I consistently get at least 18mpg rather I'm crawling in 4 low on the trail or running around town, usually more on the highway. 4 runner is probably going to hold its value better than any other SUV out there.
ETA: finding one with lower mileage could prove to be difficult.
X5 with straight 6, not v8 and you will see low 20s on freeway. E53 model is available for.that price range. Maintenance is more expensive then what your looking at.
No matter what you pick get a pre purchase inspection. Having the vehicle looked at after you already own it can make a grown man cry.
I have a trailblazer I am thinking about unloading as well. I hate it.
Some of the later Nissan SUVs and trucks, I would avoid with automatics. I can't remember the exact year range, so you'll have to do some research. They had issues with the transmission coolers inside the radiators leaking. It cross contaminates the cooling system and transmission. Destroys the transmissions in short order as a result of this. I've encountered a few of these at work just this year, so not a good sign. With any SUV, there tends to be higher repair costs, some more than others. Toyotas a pretty good, but tend to be pricey. When they do need repairs, it costs. Jeeps can run the range of cheap to pricey, and repairs run that range too. I bought my '05 Liberty in 2011 well under your budget with 44k miles on it, 4wd and a 6spd manual. The only repairs I've had to do is a battery(had the OE in it still) and a belt idler pulley. It would be smallish for you though. Cherokees are getting cheap but finding one not beat to hell is a challenge. Being what used to be a die hard ford guy, I would be reluctant to recommend any of their SUVs, or pickups. GMs with the 5.3L, early 2000's vintage should warrant close scrutiny as they have had plenty of cylinder head issues that required head replacements. Most of those have cycled thru but I'm still seeing a few.
buy my trailblazer (4500) :D

Maybe a little more info on what your needs are. A handicapped accessible MIL is a bit of a special need. I was going suggest a Jeep Cherokee but unless you don't mind the MIL in the front seat, then maybe not.
How about a Mommy van? Large sliding doors for easy access.
Is a Honda CRV too small for your taste? My parents got a 2010 CRV and they LOVE it. I've driven it several times and it is great. The newer ones seem a bit bigger than the older ones.
If you don't need to go off road, I also vote minivan.
My wife has her carolla. We take care of her mother who has severe arthritis. She usually rides front seat but needs at least the running boards to get in. We want room in the back for either my duty gear or space for two medium sized dogs. All wheel or four wheel drive for the snow. Smaller than my expedition but not a small SUV or crossover. Mid sized is the preference. It will be my daily driver. Which is why I don't want or need a minivan.
I've been really happy with my 4runners. I've been in my last one for 8 years, at 215k now. Supercharged it at 100k and she's still going strong.
What mpg were you getting with your expy? I am in the market for one. I saw someone say crv but that is too small. How about a honda pilot? They say it gets 16-22 mpg.
I was getting 14-16. Its sold now
My 1999 tahoe could be had for the right price. I need something with some better gas mileage.
I have a buddy that just sold an '07 VW Touareg V-10 diesel for $15k. fully loaded, every option and only 100k miles\. He was offered 14k for a trade and sold it in 2 days on craigslist.
I have a touareg also and love it, would suggest looking for something like that. the V-10 real world mileage is about 24mpg
my previos car was an audi allroad. it's a crossover , part station wagon, part suv. Has HUGE interior room, adjustable susspension so easier for your mother in law to get in and out. An they can be had for under 10k now (they were 50k new). If audi was still importing the a6 version, I would have bought another
Having owned a toureg and an all road I can say those are 2 vehicles I would never wish on anyone. I'm not getting into details on my experiences. They are both amazing vehicles but cost of ownership, known problems and the amount of time they spent in the shop there are many better options.
I hear nothing but good things about the older 4-runners. However, my wife and I haven't owned anything other than Cherokee/Grand Cherokee's since 1990 so I'm not sure I'd know how to drive anything else...my current one has 200K miles on it.
From my experience, owning really any german car, or euro car for that matter is an expensive proposition. They break like any other car, and when they do, it costs. The last shop I worked at, we had one euro specialist. Just the money made off the euro stuff could keep the doors open. They may be fine when brand new, but when you get some miles on them, look out. There is a reason for low resale value. I saw a sad situation pan out constantly, with GIs buying used BMW 7 series cars cheap with their combat pay, only to get [panic]when they get their first repair estimate. Tmleader has a lot more experience in euros than I, and he can give a lot more incite into them than I could ever dream of, but from my experience, run away, lol.
