Anyone with any experience with a 22lr conversion for the ar-15? Like to shoot the AR but would like to feed it cheaper..
I shot 22lr ar15 pistol before.. but never tried the conversion kit. Call mike at bowers tactical. He has a drop in 22lr bolt for $200. He might be able to give you some feedback.
I've got two Atchisson kits made by Ceiner. Both run fine in semi, with just about any ammo (I used Rem. Golden Bullet 36gr HP and Federal copper-plated 36gr HP in the 550rd bulk packs). The Atchisson kits are also made by Spike's and CMMG now, so there are other sources than Ceiner. 10rd mags are standard, steel 30rd and plastic 27rd (black dog machine) mags are also available.
Only one of my kits runs right in full auto, and only about 95% of the time - but that won't be an issue for you unless you've got an M16 lower or RDIAS.
I've got a conversion, just recently bought it, although haven't tried it yet... yet... maybe soon I can get out and let you know...
I have a CMMG insert coming in next week.
I'll post how it works out after a bulk 550 pack.

Are there any negative effects of running .22 LR through a .223 bbl?
I got the insert in while I was gone over the weekend. Initially it looks good, smooth function. I'll try and test it out this weekend.
Not to disagree with you Hoser, but the CMMG pamphlet that I received with the insert states that to clean the bore after shooting .22LR, fire a rifle round to clear the leading, then clean like normal for an AR.
Never done it myself, don't know if it would affect pressure or not.

why not do a 5.0 v8 conversion, im pulling one out of a eb fairmont this weekend, you can buy the motor, auto, computer, everything you need for 1200
I have a Stainless CMMG 22lr kit and it works great. It dosent like remington 22lr. The only down side is it spits oil all over you no matter what it seems like. Around 500rds of 22lr I try to run 5rds of 5.56mm to blow all the crap out. Best money I have spent in a long time!!!

Bad plan, assuming you didnt scrub the barrel 100% clean.
All you do is squish all that lead and carbon build-up from the 22 ammo into the lands and grooves. When you do scrub it, it is a real bear to get out.
22 LR is filthy. Clean your barrel before you go shooting 223 through it.
I have the TacSol dedicated upper and love it! I have heard about poor accuracy in the conversions with 223/556 barrels so I opted for the full upper. Well worth the extra couple hundred bucks IMO. Put it on a dedicated RRA lower with two stage trigger and it Shoots nice little groups. I only have about 300 rounds through it, but I have not had a single ftf fte etc with bulk hollow points or solid points. I couldnt believe how well it ran.
I have both a dedicated upper and a conversion bolt. I have no problems with either. If you want tight groups, go with a dedicated upper. If you're just wanting to cheaply plink with your 'real' AR, then go for the bolt. My conversion bolt can hit clay targets out to 100 yards using a 3x magnifier. That's good enough for my needs.
As for cleaning after using the conversion bolt, I generally do barrel-only cleaning at the range after shooting 22 and then fire a few rounds of 5.56 to clear any gunk out of the gas system. I do a thorough cleaning at the house to get all the grit out of the chamber and lower.
I have used a CMMG a couple of times with pretty good results.
A couple of things-
1-Make sure that the chamber is CLEAN before you insert the adapter.
2-Lube the adapter with Tetra grease or similar before inserting it.
Getting the adapter stuck can be a bitch.
For the cost of the upper alone why not just get something like the S&W M&P22 or the like?

It was all together when I got it I had to take it apart and see what made it go...
rtg - how much did that upper cost - if 'ya don't mind me askin'...
349.00 at Copes...Comes with one mag ready to install on your lower.
I've tried the inserts and a dedicated upper both. Having said that, for the money Id buy a 10/22 and call it a day. If you just want the AR look, theres plenty of stuff out there to do the job. I think you'll be happier and be money ahead usually.
PS I seem to be the only person ever to get a POS from Spikes.
Never shoot .223 after using .22 lr adapter even manufacturer says anything !
I have changed several barrels ruined that way with CMMG / Ciener. Chrome plated barrel may get f****d up with just one .223 round after using .22 lr and without cleaning barrel and chamber very carefully.
Like Hoser said, get separate .22 lr upper. I have good experiences with V22 but Spikes looks nice too.
