Don't forget about your application! Good luck!
Put in for my deer license today. Going to hunt them this year with my bow. It's the only hunting I'm going to do this year other than coyotes so I wanted a long season. [Luck]
Not a bad call on the weapon of choice. Less competition at least. You just going for deer or any of the other many big game here in CO?
Thanks for the reminder!
I've vowed to never again hunt rifle antelope on public land.
Opening day looked like a pumpkin patch with all the orange in the fields.
It is the only species I haven't put in for yet. I need to call a few people 1st and get permission.
Already applied for rifle cow elk and archery deer.
EDIT: 4/7/09 Put in for Rifle Doe Antelope in unit 110... supposed not to need any pref points according to last year stats.
I got myself put in for deer and put in for preference point for elk (always go over-the-counter bull). I've got Second season already reserved at work for the time off (ahead of my hunting co-worker).
I put my son in for his deer and elk preference points too. Next year he'll start hunting with me and should have enough points to draw a deer permit.
I also bought my fishing/small game combo license today (I know, running a little late). I didn't get a chance to use it much last year (just went fishing a few times, no small game).
Like I say every year.... This year will be different!
I am ready for some hunting. I will be bring my dad up from AZ for some pronghorn or elk. My 7mm is tired of eating up #10 cans of jelly. [Sniper]
hope everyone gets what they wanted
I am ready.
put it for:
elk: muzzleloader, pref point, then archery either sex
deer: archery
moose: pref. point
bear: pref. point
sheep: pref. point
goat: pref. point
antelope: pref. point
should hopefully draw fall turkey, and I know I will get to hunt deer and elk this year![Flower]
I will have deer and elk I put in for a point for speed goats as with my schedule I don't know if I could hunt them or not.
I will buy an over the counter bear tag for deer season. I don't put in for sheep or mnt goats as that is like target practice rather than hunting.
Then of course there will be pheasants and P-dogs, yotes and what ever else I can hunt inbetween work and life.
I like to wait till the last minute.....LOL
wish they wouldn't hang out in the yard all the time.
I need to figure out how to apply in such a way that I get a preference point and still hunt where I want to. I haven't figured out how to work it yet. Essentially I need to apply in an area that I have no chance in hell of getting for my first choice and then put where I really want to hunt as my second choice right?
sometimes it might work but if your second choice requires a point then you maybe SOL.
What we have been doing is this we like to hunt a specific area, requires a point, we know we can't always get it because of that, so we mix it up like muzzleloader usually doesn't require for cow elk, Bam we get that and 1st choice was point only.
Also our unit borders an open unit so if we don't get any and some do we all camp together and some hunt N side while others hunt south. Hope this helps.
YOUCH $400 total! Dang Bighorn point cost me a ton! other wise I got Deer second season and went for points on everything else, Elk, Antelope, and Bighorn. I will get an over the counter elk in bow season but still put in for points so maybe I can get into a trophy GMU sometime in the next twenty years!!

DONE. I did the online application. I figured if I waited until Tuesday night the system would crash and I would be screwed. Hope everyone else gets it done.

I went down to the office on Broadway and filled out the paperwork to toss in the box. I will start working in the preference points next year.
When is Moose season I saw this one during 4th season Elk last year.

Just got back from the P.O. made sure that the rider put them in his saddle bags and then watched while he rode towards Denver.
P.S. that ONE ugly dog ya got there USMC
No, I've never hunted the Wet Mountains from this side.
I have hunted the other side in the valley. The San Luis Valley has tons of deer along the Wet mountains on that side. I hunted that when I was in College. Follow the road from the Sand Dunes into the wilderness area along the creek. Tons of deer.
There is deer everywhere around here and in Teller County.
We have a couple dozen deer walk down the property every afternoon-evening.
I hunt right in the office at my desk. I get up and grab the bow when they are close enough to shoot.
My goal is not to have to drive more than 15 minutes to go hunting for any big game species. No goats, bear, moose or sheep though. Sheep and bear are about 20 minutes away. Goats and moose are a good hour plus.
I think I'm retarded cause I don't understand the point system. I put in for elk then for deer I put 1)pref point 2)buck. If I pull the buck tag does that mean no point? Or was there no point in putting a 2nd choice since I'm only getting a point?
there is a different app. for each species. elk, deer bear, moose, antilope.
so if you put in for elk, don't get first then you get a point, no points used for 2nd choice if you get that, and so on. Points only account when used for 1st choice drawing. And if you put in just for a point or don't get your 1st choice draw you get a point. and they continue to aquire for that species only. you can't use deer points for anything but deer, elk for elk, etc.
Deer same as above put in for 1st choice deer or for a point only put in second choice you may or may not get that but hope you see how this is working.
you can put a pref. point as your first choice. this guarantees you will get a point. your second choice can go for a license. it will not use your points you currently have if you draw and you get to add the pref. point from option 1 to you collection. this is how guys still hunt but save up 20+ points to hunt in the sweet areas.
or you can apply for a point and go get an over the counter tag.
Holy Crap thanks for warning almost forgot to put in...
I got mine in last night, it took over 2 hours to get it in, their server was overloaded (with out of staters most likley) and it kept kicking me off.
Out of staters are ruining hunting here. Its good for our economy but CO bends over backwards for these invaders. I read in a hunting mag that CO has one of the lowest resident hunter numbers in the west but yet it is the biggest money making state for hunting in the west if not the whole country. Thats a shame! Its because of the regs or over regulating of the season to allow these "out of towners" to have an equal stake in the game. CO is beautiful. The herds are great. Trophies can be found. But damn I hate the regs.
I don't mind it. I know where to go, they don't. there are a lot of guys who hunted here as residents then left the state. a lot due to the type of people moving in, especially in the mountain towns. The incoming money keeps our hunting alive. I put in close to 1K a year to the DOW so i am doing my part, but out of state pay big money to hunt here. most are unsuccessful. I have been a bit more fortunate[Beer]
So if I understand it correctly, you can put in for a point 1st choice, then whatever tag you actually want and get both? Why doesn't everyone do that? I shoulda put a point for elk 1st choice too.
I have 6 points for deer and I need 15 for the area I want to hunt. I always put in the area I want as 1st choice, just in case I might actually get drawn with less points.
For Elk I generally need 3-4 points to get drawn in the area I want. BUT, I have been crawn in that area with as few as 1 point.
If I did not put in for these as 1st choices I wouldn't hunt nearly as often in the areas that I want to hunt. I would instead be settling for areas that require no points and areas that I truely really don't want to hunt.
just got thru talking to a freind who came back from the DOW office. He said that because of the economy they have recieved alot less apps. from out of state hunters. And our in state #'s are down also at this time. Course mail prolly hasn't been counted. However he said looks like alot more leftovers will be available this year.
If you put in for a point for your first choice you'll get a point and any points you already have stay put (except for moose - you have to apply for a tag every 5 yrs or face losing all of your points).
If you put in for a tag for your second choice you MAY draw a tag IF there are any left after all those who put in for a tag for their first choice have been worked through. If you do draw a tag, you don't lose your points since you drew out on your second choice.
Even if you apply for a tag as your second choice, you still have to pay up front for the tag/pref point. I also believe that you'll still get charged a $3 application fee above the price of the tag.
I hope all those who wanted to apply got their apps in by midnight last night or the only way you're coming to Cinderellas ball this year is via an over-the-counter tag.
Yes, Kiowa Creek, Ranching for Wildlife.... male trophy buck, now listed as either sex tag
DE104W1O1R
If I wanted to buy a tag and hunt there through Tri-State Outfitters the cost would be in the tens of thousands instead of the standard state tag price.
In the mean time I continue to get a deer every year with the bow from my second chioce in my driveway at work.
