Okay, so I've come to the conclusion that I need to put together a real bug out bag. First things first, I really don't know what you put in a bug out bag. I usually keep a first aid kit, survival kit, food (protein bars), and water in the truck, But what else do guys keep in your kits and why?
I don't want to sound like a dick, but there's lots of threads on this forum to search.
- redundant ways to purify water
- redundant ways to create fire
- redundant ways for shelter
And everything above have at least 2 - 3 uses.
Then test the stuff out. I'm wanting to take my Get home bag and nothing else out this year and test it out. Perhaps with a organize a gathering or so.
+extra layer of clothing. Ultimately the goal is stay warm, protected, and content (food/water). :PQuote:

Things I have My get home bag is one an the same:
- Wool, wool, wool. I wear wool shirts almost all the time, so my body is used to it and it does not itch me.
- Wool gloves, Socks (cotton ones too (tinder)), beanie cap, scarf, shirt.
- Extra Ammo for my carry piece. (for dealing with trouble on the way home)
- 4-5 ways of creating fire.
- Stanless hobo stove of my own making (It has 2 pots and more tinder/emergency fuel) in a pinch I can use sticks in it because it is steel and not aluminum.
- 3+ days of food that I can cook in one pot on my stove.
- 3+ ways of making water drinkable.
- an extra container (in case I come upon a water source and cannot purify on the spot)
- 55 gallon drum liners (emergency shelter)
- emergency blanket/tarp
- wool blanket
- a couple other odds and ends that vary on the season, but I pretty much keep everything the same throughout, because if SHTF I don't think the problems would fix themselves in one season, so I prepare for the worst.
In my EDC I have some of the above except on a smaller scale and stashed on different parts of my body. Plus a way of bartering. (90% silver, 1/4 Eagle or two) off and my carry pistol. If I am away from home for extended period, I have my AR pistol in the car.
Every car has a get home kit I am never away from home without them.
Since ammo is still so expensive lately, I am thinking about packing a Dillon 650 in my BOB instead. That way I'm set. LOL.Quote:

As with all of these SHTF scenarios though, start with the most likely problems you expect to face. Do you work in an office somewhere? Do you have a good kit in your car you could use in case you need to get home and have to walk? Did you remember warm clothes and comfortable shoes?
Maybe next - if your place is hit or going to be hit by a fire, flood, tornado, or other natural disaster, do you have a bag you can grab on the way out the door that you could live out of for a few days? If you have a family, think of them too. Consider that maybe you already have a kit in your car as a starting point if you can grab it.
Anyway, just think about why you want a bag before you start buying stuff you found on some list on a website. We've all been there, and probably have boxes of extra junk we're not using to prove it.

I like Sensibleprepper channel. I also made a list and started half-heartedly putting stuff together. My stuff has come a long way since then.

My GHB and BOB are two very different things.
My GHB is what I need to move quick from work to home or to pick up the kid and then home. It's about 5.5 miles, figure 2 hours. I don't need a ton of stuff. It's all through city so my need for shelter, water purification, etc. is greatly reduced. If something happens and I'm at work my only goal is to get home ASAP so my GHB which doubles as my EDC bag is built around that. If we do travel out of town then I throw my BOB in the truck as it can sustain my wife, kid and I for 3-4 days.

There's a bunch of other stuff that is more geared towards EDC than getting home as well as redudancies that I left out but those are the high points.
I've also completely moved on from the fantasy of bugging out to the hills and living off the land. I've got a 3 year old boy, a wife with very little outdoor skills and wouldn't be able to hump the supplies need to sustain them. Based on that, our priority is bugging in. If bugging in isn't an option or we're displaced due to natural disaster, fire, etc. I've got my BOB which is capable of keeping us comfortable for 3-4 days barring more extreme conditions. If we're not able to stay local and transportation is available then we'll load up and head to Wyoming.

I noticed that once I built an EDC bag that I can bring to work every day, when it comes time to go on vacation, that same bag has all the stuff I usually put in a carry on anyway. Makes packing so much faster.
