I am planning a driving trip to New England next fall.
I usually keep a pistol in the vehicle.
I will travel around Massachusetts and was thinking about what to do with the pistol while there, since firearms aren't allowed there.
One thought was to rent a locker outside the State and store the pistol until I am on the way home.
Has anyone addressed this problem? I was wondering how the Over The Road drivers handled it?

The traveling part is easy - research "Peaceable Journey" laws (or go look up: Code of Federal Regulations - Title 18 - Part I - Chapter 44 - Paragraph 926A: Interstate Transportation of Fire Arms, 3-8-2005). The issue comes up once you stop. Don't have an answer there.
Just don't get pulled over, and don't stop at public places. Problem solved.
Illinois along the was is also a concern.
Interstate transportation law asmo pointed out is your only real protection. If you're staying in Massachusetts good luck.
Otr drivers carry blugeons or knives.

I read the Federal Law and then the MA statutes.
An interesting section in the MA states:
This section shall not apply to the storage or keeping of any firearm, rifle or shotgun with matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap or similar type of ignition system manufactured in or prior to the year 1899, or to any replica of any such firearm, rifle or shotgun if such replica is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition.
So, an alternative might be to take an unloaded Black Powder Replica, or maybe a bludgeon. MA has some restrictions on knives too

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/h...6---A000-.html
seems as though you unload it and lock it up, i dont see anywhere in here that you cannot keep it with you on your journey.

Seriously, though, the upper East coast might as well be East Germany when it comes to firearms and/or ignoring and violating federal Peaceable Journey statutes. The web abounds with horror stories of people that followed all the rules and were arrested, charged, and convicted for thing like possession of a single round of hollow point ammo (in a locked storage container in their locked vehicle trunk). This is yet another reason I have no use for much of anything north of the Mason-Dixon line and east of the Mississippi.

New Jersey isn't any better. They've arrested people at the airport for changing planes with firearms in their luggage(without ever having the luggage in their possession) that were banned under NJ law.Quote:

i would think that any locker you would "rent" would be at a transportation hub, seems that taking it in a place like that would be much worse than sticking it under your seat or way down in the trunk of your vehicle.
